LIVE Donauinsel (Anniversary Edition: Donauinsel Live ) is a posthumous live album release by the Austrian musician Falco . It is a recording of the 1993 concert at the Donauinselfest and has been released both on CD and DVD.

The original release on DVD contains some excerpts from a concert in the Wiener Stadthalle. The re-release for the 25th Danube Island Festival includes a documentary about the 1993/94 tour and a memorial appearance for Falco as bonus material.

background

After the 1992 album Nachtflug turned out to be a commercial success when it topped the Austrian charts, Falco and his band went on a night flight tour in 1993 . However, according to his own statement, this should not be considered a doctorate.

“The record went really well for us, it doesn't need a promotion, it's sold. I wanted to go on a tour with the worst omens to see where I stood. I wanted to come without a hit and into a time that might not be so cheap. I think that this will be recognized by the fans, definitely [...] and it's going very well. "

Compared to the concerts in the 1980s, Falco only played with a simple band line-up. The reason for this was that Falco wanted to play in clubs. According to the band member Thomas Rabitsch, Falco wanted to get closer to the audience again.

"I jumped too quickly, too unnaturally, from the clubs I came from into the huge halls."

- Falco about concerts in clubs

The rehearsals first took place in Brunnengasse in Vienna-Ottakring , after which the band moved to a Bank Austria tent . A concert later took place there. At that time, after a long time, songs from the flopped album Data de Groove were played again, such as Neo Nothing - Post of All or Alles im Liegen .

Some time before that, a concert was played in front of around 25 people at a former airport in Munich . Falco actually wanted to cancel this performance because of the low number of viewers, but he said the audience that appeared was the right one.

“It was maybe even a better gig than the 100,000 on Danube Island. So these smaller things - it was bad for me to see them. "

- Producer and band member Thomas Rabitsch about the performance in Munich

For the 10th anniversary of the Danube Island Festival, Falco and his band performed there in June 1993 in front of around 100,000 spectators. The concert was the last appearance on his tour in 1993. However, additional concerts were held in 1994 in addition to the tour.

Concert on the Danube Island

The concert mainly included songs from the albums Einzelhaft , Junge Roemer , Falco 3 and Emotional . Only Titanic and Nachtflug were performed from pieces from the more recent albums as well as from other concerts from Wiener Blut , Data de Groove or Nachtflug held on the tour .

Falco personally played some songs on the electric bass, including his first song Ganz Wien , which was released on a single . What is striking about the performance compared to the individual studio sessions is that Falco shuts down his usual rap for most of the time , instead moving on to flowing vocals.

An almost life-threatening event occurred when Falco sang the song Nachtflug : after it had started to rain, a strong thunderstorm came and lightning struck the stage. Although no one was injured, the stage technology failed for a short time. After a while the band was able to continue playing. Before Falco sang his last piece for the concert, Helden von heute , the performance was interrupted because the rain got water into some amplifiers.

Publication and distribution

The DVD was released on April 14, 2004 as LIVE Donauinsel + Stadthalle at Point Music . An audio CD was also released, but only contained the recording from the concert on the Danube Island. Both publications contained pictures of appearances on the 1993/94 night flight tour. Within a very short time the DVD was almost sold out, there were only remaining stocks in stores, and the first release was later even banned because the Point Music company paid neither the producer nor the song rights. The producer, Thomas Rabitsch, then promised that there would be a reissue .

For the 25th Danube Island Festival, which took place between September 5 and 7, 2008, the DVD with the CD was finally released as a combo pack in the distribution of Sony Music Entertainment Austria , the former label Sony BMG. The design was completely renewed for the re-release, so the new version is called Donauinsel Live (cf. original publication LIVE Donauinsel ). In addition, previously unseen camera angles were captured by amateur filmmakers for the DVD.

The chart entry in Austria only took place in July 2013.

reception

tour

Expectations for the tour weren't very high, the media forecast a flop because Falco's last tour (1988) was canceled due to insufficient interest. The critics even expected empty halls. The concert in the Bank Austria tent on the Danube Island was particularly well received. For example, on May 12, 1993 , the headline of the newspaper Der Standard's music expert Christian Schachinger: “Patron saint of oversmowing - Falco refers to the better times of Austropop in the Vienna Bank Austria tent”. He praised Falco's experienced but refreshing demeanor. On the same day, the courier wrote “The falcon's triumphant advance - with the night flight tour Falco has finally made its comeback”.

Republication

In general, the reception of the Danube Island Festival was very well received in the media. The journalist Robert Innerhofer from the magazine skug - Journal für Musik gave the re-publication 5 out of 5 possible points.

“The falcon and his band returned to the stage together in 1993. At this final gig on the 10th Danube Island Festival, 100,000 fans flew with them through an artistically and dramatically extraordinary night. Under thunder and lightning. "

- Robert Innerhofer (skug) about Donauinsel Live

The internet portal CDstarts also found positive words throughout and praised Falco as “the only equivalent on mainland Europe to Freddie Mercury ”. The only point of criticism was the lack of his most successful song, Rock Me Amadeus .

“From the first moment you get the feeling that there is a lot of experience on stage, because Falco keeps appearing rigidly on the stage and if his gestures often do not match the facial expressions, the Austrian doesn't have to worry because he does performs the pieces in recording quality and fascinates the audience. "

- Maximilian Nitzke (CDstarts.de) on Donauinsel Live

On the one hand, the DVD portal DVD Headquarters found the remaster of the sound successful, on the other hand, the picture quality was rather poor. The Internet portal Monsters and Critics rates the admission better , but it criticizes the continuation of Falco's posthumous marketing.
