Out of the Dark is a song by the Austrian musician Falco . Originally it was planned to only release the song on the album Out of the Dark (Into the Light) . But when Falco died, his former producers decided to release this very emotional song as a single on the Austrian market.

Release history

When Falco played the song to his band leader Thomas Rabitsch in 1996, he immediately suspected that it would be the second single. However, Falco was unsure and instead decided to release Naked as a second single that same year.

In 1997, on Falco's 40th birthday, Out of the Dark was played live for the first time in the Dominican Republic. He also sang the title on his last appearance.

On February 27, 1998, three weeks after Falco's death, the album Out of the Dark (Into the Light) was released, which reached the top of the long-player hit list in Austria.

The single was released in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Switzerland on March 20, 1998. It entered the top 3 of the Austrian, German and Swiss charts and was able to stay in the respective charts for months; a jump to first place was denied the title.

Music video

Since the video was produced after Falco's death, scenes were taken from Falco's old music videos. Among other things, scenes from the video of Jeanny , Der Kommissar , Charisma Kommando and his first hit Ganz Wien can be seen. There are also excerpts from the concert on the Danube Island up to his last song Naked , published during his lifetime . During the chorus, the journey of a train into (or out of) a tunnel can always be seen from the perspective of an occupant.

Interpretations

  • Many media interpreted a planned suicide or a premonition of Falco's death as the background of the song . This is mainly due to the line of text “Do I have to die to live? “At the end of the second stanza. This led to the rumor in the media that Falco had really wanted to kill himself in his car accident . However, given the fact that the song was written years before Falco's death, this is unlikely. In addition, the text of the song was not written by Falco himself, but by Torsten Böger .
  • In an Ö3 interview from 1997, about a year before Falco's death, he again said that the subject of this song - as has often been the case with Falco - are drugs. The story told is about the divorce of a man from his wife, whereupon he falls into depression and sees heroin as the only way out . Therefore, the chorus alludes to this theme with Out of the Dark (divorce) Into the Light (heroin). After the interview mentioned above, the song was first played on a radio station. His manager at the time, Claudia Wohlfromm , gave a similar explanation .
  • In his last interview, Falco said:

Out of the Dark is autobiographical - and again not. It's about drugs, in plain language: cocaine. I wrote the text from the point of view of a desperate person who is possessed by the drug without being addicted myself. "
