Ost + Front is a new German hardship band from Berlin . The initial songs were determined by a brutal style of music and monotonous rhythms, influenced by the musical and textual role model Rammstein , but in the course of time influences from industrial , metal and gothic were added. Ost + Front belongs to the so-called black scene .

history

"Herrmann Eastern Front"

Ost + Front was founded in 2008 by Patrick Lange (Herrmann Ostfront), who up to this point had played with Corvus Corax , Tanzwut and Schelmish .

In 2011 Ost + Front became accessible to a wider public at the M'era Luna Festival , which they played with Chris L. ( Agonoize ) as the front man. Less than two weeks later, Chris left the band, his place was taken by Patrick Lange under the pseudonym "Herrmann Ostfront", who had previously taken over the guitar and the background vocals. This hindered the timely release of the debut album.

On August 10, 2012, the debut album Ave Maria was released. The album was preceded by the music video I love it , which not only met with critical reactions in the music press, but was also denied "18+" approval by the FSK because of explicit sexual representations . After a change, the DVD sold in a bundle with the album received the approval “16+”. Despite this restriction, the album entered the German album charts at number 68 for a week on August 28th . The album itself met with mixed reactions, Metal.de criticized the fact that Ost + Front “ copied the rulers of Rammstein rather unrestrainedly ”, Legacy.de judged that “despite the sometimes getting used to the lyrics [...] and the rather amusing look [...] the provocation potential - which is apparently so important to the band - would remain rather low ”. Nevertheless, the music quality and entertainment were praised. Club concerts followed in several German cities at the end of 2012, and in March 2013 there were two foreign guest performances for the first time. From April to August of the same year, Ost + Front performed at several major black scene festivals , such as the Blackfield Festival and the M'era Luna Festival .

"Eva Edelweiss"

At the end of September 2013 Ost + Front released the EP Please Beat Me , which also contained a cover version of Falco's hit Out of the Dark .

On January 24, 2014, the second album Olympia was released , which entered the Media Control album charts at number 25. Musikreviews.de described the album as an admirably perfect copy of Rammstein in places, which, however, lags far behind them in terms of quality and whose lyrics do not make people think about it, but rather make others feel ashamed. The trendy magazines Tombstone and Mindbreed , on the other hand, praised the profound texts and the attention to detail. Compared to their debut, Ost + Front had developed further musically and delivered a “brute total package for the joy of black humor”. The English-language online magazine Reflections of Darkness also rated the album positively, but came to the conclusion that all those who are not fans of the band and their music would hardly be able to appreciate the album ( On the other hand if such kind of music can 't be called as one of your preferences, it will be hardly possible to find something really great for you on the release ).

On October 30, 2015, the single Sternenkinder was released, which was limited to 999 copies. The accompanying music video appeared at the same time. In addition to the original song Sternenkinder , the single also features two remixes for the song. One is from Blutengel , the second from Rob Dust . The orchestral version of Moldau can be found as the fourth song . The song is based on Die Moldau by the Bohemian composer Bedřich Smetana .

On January 22nd, 2016 the third studio album Ultra was released as CD, double CD with six additional songs and in a limited box. The music video for Bruderherz previously appeared on YouTube . The song Fiesta De Sexo is sung in Spanish with Erk Aicrag, singer of the band Hocico . In the event of suicide , Ost + Front receives musical support from B. Deutung . On the second disc there is a cover version of Please hit me by Voicewell . According to metal.de, Ultra impresses with "particularly black humor OST + FRONTs, which not everyone will like" and is considered to be "an all-round coherent and mature album."

On December 22, 2017, Arm & Reich released the first single from the announced album Adrenalin . On February 2, 2018, the second single Heavy Metal was released as video and MP3. On February 16, 2018, the album Adrenalin was released as CD, double CD with four additional songs, as an LP and as a box set.

The "Adrenalin" concert from Summer Breeze , played in Bavaria on August 17, 2019 , was recorded by the German-French broadcaster Arte and can currently be found on YouTube.

After two and a half years of work, the fifth studio album, Dein Helfer in der Not , was released on July 31, 2020 . Previously, the single Ikarus was released on June 26, 2020 and Schau ins Land on July 17, 2020. Music videos were published for both songs on YouTube. At the same time as the album was released, the music video for Geld Geld Geld was released .

Music genre

Musically, Ost + Front can be assigned to the New German Hardship. Their music is strongly reminiscent of Rammstein in terms of both content and music.

“OST + FRONT not only sound like RAMMSTEIN, they also adapt their songs. The most striking example of this is "Ost + Front 2014", which is composed of "Moscow" (music) as well as "Links 2 3 4" and "Rammlied" (text). "

- Philipp Walter : Musikreviews.de

“[Rammstein] might ask: When did we record that? Or also: Damn it, why didn't we record it? "

- Kym Gnuch : Sonic Seducer

In some cases, textual patterns are adopted one-to-one:

"When I left your skin - Spring bleeds in Paris - In Paris"

- Rammstein spring in Paris

"You are my paradise - I still have a suitcase in Paris - In Paris"

- East + Front Hard World

"I stole a kiss from her - she wanted to repeat it"

- Rammstein hermaphrodite

"I stole a dream from you - he recommended himself to me in my sleep"

- East + Front Blitzkrieg

Or certain words are sometimes so dominant that a connection to Rammstein is forced on the listener. For example, the repeated mentioning and emphasis of the word putas in the song Fiesta de Sexo automatically creates a link to Rammstein's Te quiero puta! .

Critics attested the band a further development and praised their own style and profound lyrics. Songs are often socially critical or deal with the abysses of human psyche and behavior.

“What is particularly noticeable about“ Ultra ”is that OST + FRONT have matured. Total lyrical failures of the brand “Perfect” are almost nonexistent on the latest work by the Berliners. "

- Matthias Weise : Metal.de

Controversy

Since a right-wing extremist band from Thuringia bears the name "Ostfront", and Ost + Front initially wrote itself in the same way, associations with right-wing extremist ideas arose. The band then changed their name and repeatedly distanced themselves from right-wing extremism.

At the end of September 2013, the mayor of Windeck , Hans-Christian Lehmann, banned the band from giving a concert in the Kulturhalle Kabelmetal after residents and the local community's cultural foundation complained that Ost + Front glorified violence and that the band was politically motivated by its name imputed. The band contradicted the allegations.
