The Rough Trade Distribution GmbH (RTD) is a company based in Germany music distribution . It was founded in 1982 with initially six employees as the German branch of the English music label Rough Trade .

history

As the German branch of the English label Rough Trade , the company initially specialized in the distribution of British independent music in Germany under the leadership of managing directors Kurt Thielen and Heino Drecker . During this time, the distribution of releases by bands like Joy Division , New Order , The Smiths or the Sugarcubes fell .

After the British parent company went bankrupt in 1991, Pinnacle Entertainment , the then largest British independent label , bought Rough Trade Distribution . With their help, new contacts were made and the sales area expanded. Since the beginning of the 1990s, more and more independent German labels have joined the Rough Trade distribution.

In 1996 the Zomba Music Group acquired Pinnacle Entertainment and in the process also Rough Trade Distribution . As a result, the company is responsible for the distribution of musicians and bands such as the Backstreet Boys , Britney Spears or R.Kelly and changed its name to Zomba Distribution . In 2001, Clive Calder decided to get out of the music business and sold the Zomba company to BMG / Bertelsmann AG . As part of this, Arvato , the logistics branch of the Bertelsmann Group, took over German independent sales in 2003 , which again operated under the name Rough Trade Arvato and was able to continue its work at the Herne location . In 2004, when Sony Records and Bertelsmann Music Group merged to form Sony BMG , the name Rough Trade Distribution was reactivated.
