Saline Grace is a German alternative band that emerged from the avant-garde formation Nobility of Salt and was founded in 2005 by Ricardo Hoffmann and Ines Hoffmann (née Pollok).

style

To this day, Saline Grace have attached great importance to almost exclusively acoustic instruments. Ricardo Hoffmann's exceptionally filigree guitar style is unmistakable, and with his plucking techniques, mandolin-like ornaments and melancholy slide and twang guitar sounds reminiscent of the 1960s, he often knows how to create pictorial synesthesia. His rather demanding poetry, written in English, often deals with philosophical-anthropological topics and mostly has a strong symbolism. Subtly embedded in a soundscape consisting mainly of piano, organ, concertina , banjo, violin, accented percussion and often played with a broom, as well as Ines Hoffmann's deep bass, Ricardo Hoffmann's dark and emotional baritone is perfectly staged and thus sometimes reminds of singers like Nick Cave or Leonard Cohen .

Band name

The mental closeness to water, explicitly to the oceans considered the origin of earthly existence, was already in the name of Saline Grace's predecessor, Nobility of Salt. This was consequently continued as a common thread. "Tied to that saline grace of a noble but fragile ocean" is what The Valley says on the Saline Grace debut album Border Town Shades , whereby this line of text was also helpful in finding the band's name.

history

1994-2004

Ricardo Hoffmann, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist with Saline Grace, was born on January 21, 1975 in the eastern border town of Frankfurt (Oder) . In 1994 he founded his first band project, which resulted in the avant-garde formation Nobility of Salt in 1996. At that time, the band consisted of René Hoffmann (vocals), Ricardo Hoffmann as the band's songwriter (guitar, keyboard, percussion), Ines Pollok (guitar) and Stephan Weidner (bass).

In 1997 a first demo followed, The Evening Prayer , and the move to London, where Stephan Weidner left Nobility of Salt shortly afterwards and Ines Pollok took over his role on bass. Numerous UK gigs left corresponding musical traces on a second demo, Through Clouds and Thoughtful Years , in 1998 , and even the now defunct British music magazine Melody Maker paid attention to the band in its March 20, 1999 issue. At the turn of the millennium, the scenery changed to Berlin to work on a first album, which was released a few months later under the title The Tremulous Sea . After the EP The Silent Ship in 2002, another album was released in April 2004 with the title Those Narrow Streets , whereby this release should be the last release of Nobility of Salt for organizational reasons.

2005-2009

These developments paved the way for Saline Grace and in 2005 Ricardo Hoffmann began working on the material for the first Saline Grace album. He was supported by his wife and longtime bassist, Ines Hoffmann (née Pollok), who also saw the light of day on July 20, 1976 in Frankfurt (Oder). First came into contact with Nobility Of Salt in 1996, she shares the musical path and inspiration with Ricardo Hoffmann to this day. Saline Grace released their critically acclaimed debut album entitled Border Town Shades on September 1, 2007.

In 2009, Saline Grace and Nobility of Salt were included in the book by English music journalist Mick Mercer (among others for Melody Maker), Music To Die For ; a kind of encyclopedia of the alternative and gothic scene with descriptions, interview articles and discographies of the bands.

2010–2012

Between the recording and mixing for another Saline Grace album in 2011 Ricardo Hoffmann took time Dark Orange for a brief guest appearance in the Hamburg band to next Steven Burrows , a member of the English cult band And Also the Trees , on Bass, on their double album Horizont, to work on additional guitars and piano.

In early 2012, during the final work and video shoots for Saline Grace, he also designed the rising stream mix of the dark orange song Traumwandler für Interpretations , the corresponding second CD of the same publication; other remixes were contributed by artists such as Robin Guthrie of the Cocteau Twins , members of And Also the Trees, and many others.

Since 2013

Other Saline Grace albums followed in 2013. Ricardo Hoffmann's band released their second album, Fog Mountain, on January 21, 2013, and four years later, their third album, Blacksmith's Fire, on September 4, 2017.
