Dark Spy - Musik + Lifestylemagazin was an Oberhausen music and culture magazine of the black scene with a special focus on the area of fetish fashion . The magazine was published every two months by the publishing and media agency ARCANO and distributed by VU Verlagsunion , a subsidiary of the Bauer Media Group . The magazine was mainly available in Germany with a circulation of 15,000 copies, but was also distributed in Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, Poland and the Benelux countries.

history

The Dark Spy was first published in the summer of 2003 with the subtitle The Bizarre Underground Magazine . The first issues of the magazine appeared quarterly as black and white A4 fanzines with a length of 36 pages. In 2005 the page thickness was increased to 52. Since then, each issue has been accompanied by a multimedia CD containing music from the black scene as well as artist presentations, mostly from the field of fetish photography. In 2006, the Dark Spy increased its circulation for the first time. In the following year, with the 15th issue, the magazine began the sales cooperation with VU Verlagsunion. The magazine meanwhile changed the distribution frequency to a bimonthly issue and the design of the magazine to an aestheticized glossy magazine with 60 pages, which were initially designed in color and black and white printing, and later in full four-color printing . With the summer edition of 2007, the page size was increased to 68.

content

The magazine mainly contained interviews, club and concert reports as well as short portraits and reviews on the music of the black scene and on artists from the field of fetish photography. The musical focus of the magazine was on interpreters of metal and the technoid forms of music received in the scene. Interviews with renowned music groups in the scene such as Eisbrecher , Lacrimosa , Marilyn Manson , Within Temptation or Rammstein were printed. Furthermore, non-music-related topics such as historical treatises on the First World War or the Middle Ages , fashion depictions for example on steampunk or everyday mysticism such as vampirism were found in the magazine.

layout

In contrast to most of the music magazines in the scene, no musicians were shown on the cover of the magazine, but mostly fetish models . As a supplement, double cover editions were often published, which were produced with cover designs on the front and back. In this variant, in addition to the cover with a fetish model, a cover with a band or artist photo was provided. For the fetish cover pictures, mostly photographs by the artists presented in the magazine were used. In addition, the magazine announced an annual competition for which potential cover models for the summer edition of the respective year could apply. The magazine also designed an annual fetish calendar.
