And Also the Trees is a British post-punk band from England.

history

The band was founded in Inkberrow ( Worcestershire ) in 1979 by the brothers Simon and Justin Jones, as well as Graham and Nicholas Havas. And Also the Trees was inspired by the ideology of the burgeoning punk movement in England. In contrast to many bands from this genre, they did not move to the music metropolis of London, but stayed in their hometown.

In 1980 And Also the Trees sent The Cure a demo tape . 1981 And playing Also the Trees during a tour of the UK several times as their opening act . Her second demo tape Under The Hill was co-produced partly by Robert Smith and partly by Mike Hedges.

Their first two singles Shantell and The Secret Sea and their debut album named after the band were produced by then The Cure member Lol Tolhurst and released in 1983. Her first album reflected the post-punk influences of the time. With their album they caught the attention of radio presenter John Peel and were invited by him to a recording session that was broadcast on BBC Radio 1 on April 24, 1984 .

After a second tour in the opening act of The Cure in 1984, the musical paths of both bands parted, and And Also the Trees developed their sound further. The 1985 EP A Room Lives in Lucy introduced the mandolin-like guitar sound that became the band's trademark for the next several years.

The second album Virus Meadow from 1986 was given artificial and atmospheric instrumentation. In the same year the band went on their first European tour, of which the live album The Evening of the 24th from 1987 gives an impression. In 1987 the EP The Critical Distance was released.

The band's new sound, which they had started with the Virus Meadow album , matured in the years that followed. The singles Shaletown and The House of the Heart and the following album The Millpond Years from 1988, which was produced by Mark Tibenham, are characterized by this further refined sound. The predominant lyrical theme during this period in the band's history is the question of a modern, industrial society that invades a rural idyll.

This is also true of the 1989 album Farewell to the Shade , which was influenced by personal memories and the works of poets and painters from the early 19th century. In 1989 the single Lady D'Arbanville was released , a cover version of the Cat Stevens song of the same name , with which the Jones brothers grew up. The single Misfortunes was released in France . These years marked her greatest commercial success. With the two albums The Millpond Years and Farewell to the Shade and extensive touring, the band created a strong fan base and received attention in Japan.

In 1991 And Also the Trees toured the US and reactivated their contacts with The Cure, which resulted in the EP The Pear Tree , which contained a remix by Robert Smith and Mark Saunders. This EP was only released in the USA.

In 1992 the album Green Is the Sea was created . It was the last album produced by Mark Tibenham. They advertised the album on a European tour through Belgium, Germany, France and Switzerland. Many concerts were sold out. Die-hard fans asked the band to digitally remaster their singles and EPs. From Horizon to Horizon was finally published in 1992 . The album contains all singles and non-album pieces that were written between 1983 and 1992.

In 1993 a new chapter followed. Made in Cornwall , the new album The Klaxon is characterized by an increasing mix of urban moods. Trumpet, acoustic percussion and light tones dominate, supported by a Hammond organ .

In 1994 the band toured Europe. She then published the live album Le Bataclan and the live videos Hamburg Markthalle 1994 and Bielefeld PC 69 1992 .

In 1995 the GOL project came into being. This consisted of guitarist Justin Jones, keyboardist Mark Tibenham and singer Antonia Rainer. GOL's music is a mixture of electro , ambient and ethno . In the same year the single Soma Holiday and the accompanying album Sensations of Tone were released. The album includes a cover version of And Also the Trees' There Were No Bounds . Steven Burrows and Nick Havas moved to London and Simon Huw Jones to Switzerland.

With the seventh studio album Angelfish from 1996, the band ventured into American themes and abandoned their distinctive guitar sound, instead they now used a 1950s guitar sound. With an increased interest in different forms of American art such as painting, literature or various films and directors, And Also the Trees tried to incorporate these influences into their music to create a British view of Americana .

The 1998 album Silver Soul followed Angelfish's path with a more heterogeneous approach and more poetry elements in the lyrics in contrast to the pieces on the previous albums. Jazz influences can also be heard. Reviews have compared the album to Chris Isaak and Nick Cave in terms of the singer's sound and voice . Silver Soul was the first album that the band released on their own record label , as well as the EP Nailed , released in the same year, and the compilation Live 89-98 released on VHS .

After a five-year hiatus, And Also the Trees released their ninth studio album in 2003, recorded in Worcestershire and co-produced by Matthew Devenish. With Further from the Truth , the band left the 1950s sound of previous albums behind and tried to play what felt natural to them. With a mature and more original sound, And Also the Trees returned to their trademark, rural romanticism, saturated with a newly acquired nervousness and realism, transported with the help of a much darker sound.

In 2004 and 2005 And Also the Trees played at festivals such as the Paléo Festival Nyon and the Leipzig Wave-Gotik-Treffen . She celebrated her 25th anniversary with the Best Of album 1980-2005 and special concerts on a Parisian boat and in the Christ Church (Bochum) .

The 2006 DVD Live In Geneva shows the band's Geneva concert from their Further From The Truth tour , which took place in 2003. In addition to the concert, the DVD also contains a video and a short film produced by Justin Jones.

In the same year the singer Simon Huw Jones released an album called November , which he recorded with Bernard Trontin, the drummer of the Swiss industrial band The Young Gods .

In autumn 2007 the album (Listen For) The Rag and Bone Man was released .

In June 2009 the acoustic album When the Rains Come was released . In addition to a new song, it contains acoustic versions of previously published pieces.

The tour for the album took the band through small selected clubs to support the intimate nature of the concerts. In addition to concerts in France, Belgium and Switzerland, there was also a concert in the Matrix in Bochum .

The twelfth studio album Hunter Not the Hunted was released on March 26, 2012.

The thirteenth studio album Born into the Waves was released on March 18, 2016.
