The Transpac 52 ( TP52 or TP-52 for short ) is a specific class of regatta yachts made of carbon fiber . As a construction class , the designers and teams are prescribed certain dimensions and rules, such as the maximum weight of the 14-person crew (1273 kg). Despite its size, the TP52 is fast, light and agile, the regattas are considered attractive.

Class rules

In the owners' annual meetings, the class rules can be changed with the approval of an 80 percent majority. This requirement actually ensures that the rules are hardly ever changed.

Regattas

Since the TP-52 regattas are races of somewhat identical ships, there is no need for a complicated handicap system with subsequent time calculation (see yardstick ); real-time always counts in the Fleet Race : the ship that comes first crosses the finish line wins. This makes it easier for the audience to understand and follow the race; the regattas will be more attractive for sailors and spectators alike.

history

The class is named after its original regatta, the Transpacific Race from Point Fermin near Los Angeles to Diamond Head on the Hawaiian island of Oahu (approx. 4121 km), and after the length of the ships of 52 feet.

With the launch of a TP52 Med Fleet (TP52 Mediterranean fleet) in connection with the implementation of regattas on the Mediterranean ( Medcup , currently: Audi MedCup ), numerous European owners have got a taste for the TP52. These include celebrities such as the Spanish King Juan Carlos I , his son Felipe and King Harald V of Norway.
The European TP-52 races are also jokingly referred to as the "little America's Cup ", as its sailors also compete on the TP52. In 2007, for example, were: Christian Scherrer and Jochen Schümann (both formerly Team Alinghi ), Vasco Vascotto (Team Mascalzone Latino ), Terry Hutchinson (Team New Zealand ), John Kostecki (formerly Oracle ) and Gavin Brady ( Oracle ).
