John Paul Kostecki (born July 7, 1964 in Pittsburgh ) is an American professional sailor.

He was twice tactician aboard an America's Cup - Yacht (1995 and 2000), is a ten-time world champion of various classes and won at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul ( Korea ), the silver medal in the Soling as helmsman and his crew William Baylis and Robert Billingham . In 2001/2002 he led the Leverkusen yacht Illbruck to victory as a skipper in the Volvo Ocean Race . After a brief engagement with the America's Cup Team BMW Oracle Racing, he worked as a guard and later also as a skipper - he replaced Neal McDonald - on the Swedish yacht Ericsson in the Volvo Ocean Race 2005/2006, but only finished fifth (out of seven participants ). At the end of 2006 he signed again with the Ericsson team as skipper for the next Volvo Ocean Race 2008/2009, but resigned from his position as skipper in August 2007 for family reasons.

In 2008, the new CEO of BMW Oracle Racing , Russell Coutts , signed John Kostecki for the afterguard of his team for the next edition of the America's Cup . This edition was held between defending champion Alinghi and BMW Oracle Racing in February 2010 in front of Valencia. BMW Oracle won the America's Cup with their Trimiaran against Alinghi 2-0. John Kostecki was on board as a tactician in both races.
