William Baylis took part in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul alongside Robert Billingham as a crew member on the US boat of the Soling class of skipper John Kostecki . Despite three wins in seven races and only 14 points overall, they had to admit defeat to the German boat led by Jochen Schümann , which finished the regatta with 11.7 points. Baylis, Billingham and Kostecki finished second ahead of the Danish boat for Jesper Bank and secured the silver medal. Together with Kostecki and Billingham, Baylis won four medals at world championships : in 1985 they were first third in Sarnia , before winning the title in La Trinité-sur-Mer in 1986 and in Melbourne in 1988 . In between they won silver in 1987 in Kiel .

After the Olympic Games, Baylis first switched to windsurfing before sailing again in larger boat classes in the late 1990s. Baylis, who also completed an engineering degree, sailed among others at the Louis Vuitton Cup .
