Construction class
A construction class in sailing is defined as a construction or construction of a sailing ship , which, due to the restricted measurement regulations, gives the designer freedom with regard to the shape of the hull , the arrangement of the rig , etc. The first construction class was the special class in yachting .
There are various terms for the classification of boat types , which are based on the construction method and building regulations or, from a formalistic point of view, on the requirements of the sailing associations, i.e. in Germany the German Sailing Association (DSV), with regard to the measurement mode. The DSV differentiates between the construction classes, unit classes or compensation classes .
Usually only the maximum sail area , main dimensions of the hull, minimum weight and the like are prescribed within a construction class . Within a construction class, designs from different designers sail against each other. For these classes, with the exception of the few defined requirements, the most important rule is: Everything that is not expressly prohibited in the rules is allowed.
Well-known construction classes in Germany come mainly from the field of dinghy cruisers , such as P-boat , S-boat or R-boat or dinghy classes such as the H-dinghy or the Motte .
