As compensation class or compensation formula a is measurement mode designated by means of which boats of different classes in a regatta can compete against each other. From achieved in a regatta sailed time of a boat and its determined by measuring race value (rating) is calculated time determined. Only the calculated time is included in the ranking . In this context one speaks of remuneration and time remuneration .

In addition to the compensation classes, there are unit classes in which all boats are identical, as well as the construction classes , which allow the designer a certain amount of leeway in developing the hull shape and rigging .

Common compensation systems are the yardstick rating , IMS and ORC Club .
