A dinghy cruiser is a larger dinghy that is equipped with a cabin . Just like dinghies, dinghy cruisers are dimensionally stable and do not have a keel .

There are different classes of dinghy cruisers that differ in size and sail area . The first constructions of the better known dinghy cruiser classes listed below were mostly made in the middle of the 20th century.

These are predominantly construction classes in which only certain limit dimensions are specified that must be adhered to by the designers and shipyards . Exact specifications for the hull or rig do not exist in the regulations. For this reason, the range of constructions is very broad. The majority of the ships are wood , GRP and GRP-wood combinations built, also carbon fiber and steel are possible. In timber construction, starting in the 1970s, solid wood construction on frames was replaced by molded plywood constructions .

Originally designed for cruising in inland areas, dinghy cruisers have also been used for sporty regatta sailing since the 1970s . Active regatta scenes are mainly the 15-man dinghy cruisers ( P-boat ), the 20-man dinghy cruiser ( R-boat ) and, to a somewhat limited extent, the 16-man dinghy cruiser (S-boat) and the relatively new construction (1986) Diabolo .

There are also dinghy cruisers that are not classified.

The most common are:

  • 15-seater dinghy cruiser ( P-boat , 6.50 m long, 15 m²)
  • 16 m² dinghy cruiser (S-boat, 7 m long, 16 m², chine hull )
