The FAM is an unsinkable dinghy cruiser of approx. 5.40 m in length - sometimes 5.38 m is specified - and designed for inland waters and coastal areas. She is easy to sail from 1 to 6 Bft . Despite the ballast sword weighing 88 kg, the FAM is not self-righting . It offers space for a maximum of 5 people, and is ideally occupied by a two-man crew. Outboards with approx. 5 HP are possible as motorization; the standard attachment is on the starboard side of the transom. The boat type is widespread, with over 2500 boats sold.

history

The FAM was designed as a back decker by the successful regatta sailors Uwe Mares and Hubert Raudaschl and has been built since the beginning of 1969 with only minor changes. The self-draining cockpit is relatively long. In the first years of construction the cabin could be closed with a very large GRP flap, later the flap was replaced by a split wooden bulkhead. The two recessed oval windows on each side were replaced by one and later by a trapezoidal one, and the inner shell of the boat was enlarged in order to achieve more buoyancy in the event of the hull being flooded. Initially, the FAM had no inner shell. After a few years, an improved version with a locker was offered under the name "Fam LS". The boat was initially available in different colors, but is now only available in white. The Fam was built by Klepper in Rosenheim until 1980 , then - only with a locker - by Gruben Bootsbau in Markdorf on Lake Constance. Since 1970 there has been a class association, FAMAS Deutschland e. V. The FAM was recognized as a national class on June 28, 1979 by the German Sailing Association .

hull

The hull is made of GRP . In the bow area there is a very low cabin with beds or seats. The Fam has a built-in folding sword that can be operated with a tackle on copies from the first construction period . After a short construction period, the sword operation was switched to a crank mechanism with a long threaded spindle; Approx. 80 turns of the crank are required for complete recovery / lowering. Despite the 88 kg ballast sword, the Fam can capsize ; straightening is then only possible for very experienced sailors.

The pit yard gives different values for the draft than in the info box, namely 23 cm with the sword raised and 140 cm with the sword lowered.

Rig, sails

The rig is made of aluminum and was supplied by various manufacturers over the course of the long construction period. The mast is stabilized by steel shrouds and the forestay . Initially, spreaders were used, which were abolished in 1976/77 and reintroduced in 1979; Depending on the year of construction, the version with spreaders can have one or two pairs of shrouds. The main sail has an area of 10.7 m², the normal jib 4.5 m². In some years of construction, the Lümmel fitting allows reefing by means of a rotating reef.

Fittings and trim options are kept quite simple, the boat has no traveler .
