The P-boat or 15-seater dinghy cruiser is a boat designed as a dinghy cruiser for shallow waters. The construction class is set to a length over all (L. O.A.) of a maximum of 6,500 mm and a maximum width of 2,500 mm. The boat is common; The DSV registered more than 1960 measured boats in its yacht register. The boat is still very popular with both touring and regatta sailors .

Regatta P-boat under spinnaker

The name "15er dinghy cruiser" does not result from the entire sail area on the wind, which can be significantly higher, but is determined by the so-called silhouette of the mast . That is, the sail surface and the part of the jib , which is in the visible sail triangle, is measured. For this reason, the overlap of the genoa (up to 16 m²) is not included in the calculation. The result is an upwind sail area of around 26 m².

For the cruising sailor , the P-boat is a sporty hiking boat for inland waters or areas close to the coast, with which, due to its construction as a dinghy cruiser without a fixed keel and therefore draft, can also be moored directly on the shore. For this reason, there is also a large number of older cruise P-boats that keep actively traveling.

In the regatta scene of inland sailing , the P-boat is known as a high-tech “racing device”. A lot is demanded of the 2-person crew, because the 15 carries a lot of sails. The modern standard equipment includes three foresails with a sail area of 16 to 8 m², which can also be exchanged during a regatta when the winds change. The approximately 9 m² mainsail is driven on a filigree, stay-up mast with all the trimming options of a "flexible rig". The 50 m² spinnaker exerts a special charm on regatta sailors. Some have this almost oversized sail on board in different versions to cope with different wind conditions.

With the spread of this boat class in neighboring countries such as Austria , Hungary , Switzerland and the Netherlands , events abroad are held every year. A European Cup in Austria on Lake Neusiedl is one of the traditional events of this boat class. The focus in Germany is on the Dümmer , the Steinhuder Meer and the lakes in and around Berlin and Brandenburg ( Dahme , Havel , Müggelsee , Berlin-Schmöckwitz , Rathenow , Scharmützelsee , Spree , Werder (Havel) , Zeuthen ).
