Vienna Calling is a pop-rap song by the Austrian musician Falco from 1985. It was the second single from the studio album Falco 3 and a worldwide chart success. In addition to European top ten placements, it also reached the top 20 in New Zealand , Canada and the USA .

Origin and content

Vienna Calling was written by Falco together with the author duo Bolland & Bolland . The lyrics are about Falco's hometown Vienna and its development. On the one hand, reference is made to the increasingly international ambience of the city and the telephone as a fast means of communication; the question is also “where have your wives gone?” suggesting that they are elsewhere - this culminates at the end of the song with the alarm being “red” and “Vienna in need”. The first verse tells of a woman named Stella who “sits” “in Rio ” and “lies” in Tokyo . The fast pop-rap song is accompanied by a flute motif and accompanied by a bluesy, cleanly played guitar. Some samples ("hello") are also used that support the telephone theme. At the end the flute plays a solo.

Publication and reception

The single was released on September 11, 1985 by GiG and A&M Records . On the B-side the song Tango in the Night is included. A 12 "maxi with the 7:36 minute tourist version was released in the same year. There is also a maxi with the 7:40 minute long The Metternich Arrival Mix . In April / May 1986 the 4:00 minute long was released The New '86 Edit / Mix .

The song reached high chart positions in Europe, number three in Austria , number four in Germany and number seven in Switzerland and number ten in the United Kingdom . Tenth place in New Zealand and 18th place in the USA prove the international success of the single.

As with burning machine and Rock Me Amadeus joined Falco Vienna Calling twice in the ZDF hit parade on ; he was voted first by TED on October 16, 1985 and was therefore allowed to perform the song again in the following issue on November 13. It was the only time that Falco could win the charts.
