Gandalf (actually Heinz Strobl ; born December 4, 1952 in Pressbaum , Lower Austria ) is a composer , musician and producer. At first he was a typical representative of New Age electronic music, but today he mainly uses acoustic instruments. His style of music, which also includes elements of world music , has often been compared to that of Kitaro or Mike Oldfield  . Since 2003, many of his albums have been released on the Californian label RealMusic. Today Gandalf is one of Austria's most internationally successful musicians.

Gandalf plays many different instruments himself (acoustic and electric guitars , sitar , saz , charango , bouzouki , balaphone (African xylophone ), piano , synthesizer , various keyboards and percussion ). Other musicians who have contributed to his albums or live performances: Peter Aschenbrenner (flute), Emily Burridge (cello), Merike Hilmar (cello), Christian Strobl (percussion). Gandalf also worked with Steve Hackett , Richard Schönherz and Thomas Klock.

In 2011 his book Erdenklang + Sternentanz was published. From the score of my life symphony , Styria Books (Vienna, Graz, Klagenfurt), ISBN 978-3-222-13330-5 . His novel Die Seelenharfe followed in 2014 . A Parable of Life , Edition Outlook (Vienna), ISBN 978-3-903798-04-5 .
