Lady Leshurr in a performance (2017)

Melesha Katrina O'Garro (* 15. December 1988 in Solihull , West Midlands , England ), known as Lady Leshurr , is a British rapper , singer , record producer , radio - DJ and actress from Birmingham . Her style can be assigned to the hip-hop sub-genre Grime , but also takes up elements from the genres garage , reggae , house , dancehall and pop . Leshurr has been repeatedly referred to in the media as the "Queen of Grime" and "Queen of British Rap".

Surname

The pseudonym Lady Leshurr causes confusion over and over again, as English native speakers often pronounce it incorrectly due to the distorted spelling. Leshurr is correctly pronounced like the last two syllables of O'Garro's first name Melesha , ie "Lee-sha" or, in German translation, "Lie-scha". (  [ left: ʃə ] ). In the very beginning of her career when she rapped still in youth clubs and their first mixtape produced it used the pseudonym Lady L . A friend of her older brother used to call her that. When she was sixteen she wrote a song she called Lady Leshurr and then stuck to that name. Lady L still uses them occasionally, for example when she appears in films. Please click to listen!Play

Career

Leshurr was constantly surrounded by music in her childhood. The whole family loved music. Her siblings played music and rapped too. Leshurr began to write texts at the age of 6, which she raped on her mother's mailbox. The song Bam Bam by the reggae singer Sister Nancy gave her a decisive impetus and cover versions of Bam Bam are still part of Leshurr's live repertoire.

Her discovery of hip-hop culture, which her older sister introduced her, had a musical impact. She was particularly impressed by the music of Eminem and had a lasting influence on her. When she met them at the age of 12, she decided that she wanted to be a musician.

At the Kingshurst Youth & Community Center , a local youth center, she learned the techniques needed to mix and record her own songs. She also learned to play drums and practiced both rapping and dancing. During her time at secondary school, she regularly rapped at parties and worked as a DJ, continuously refining her skills .

At 14 years and published Leshurr produced as Lady L her first mixtape Needle In A heystack . She also promoted and sold the mixtape herself. She sold it over the counter at parties and passers-by in downtown Birmingham. The CD was also available in local record stores. When the legendary [independent] record store Tempest Records agreed to include Needle In A Heystack in their program, Leshurr was so overjoyed that she gave the store the CDs for free. She also gave away CDs to strangers or simply left them on buses and park benches in the hope that someone would find them there and take their attention. She began performing live but kept it a secret from her parents.

In the following years Leshurr performed all over England, took part in numerous rap battles, played at the Sidewinder Festival , her first pieces were played on the radio on stations such as Kiss FM and BBC 1Xtra . In 2009 she released her first official mixtape The Last Second under the name Lady Leshurr . Already the 25 pieces of the first tape showed Leshurr to be a versatile artist who allows different styles to flow into her music. In the same year another mixtape followed with Unleshurr .

Also in 2009, Leshurr - again under the pseudonym Lady L - played the role of Shakia in the film 1 Day by director Penny Woolcock . The film, the action of which is set in the gang milieu of Birmingham, was not shown in various cinemas in the city because the authorities feared riots. 1 Day received mixed reviews and was not a commercial success. For Leshurr, who also rapped in the musical, the film should prove to be decisive. The artists and producers in London, the center of the British hip-hop scene, became aware of Leshurr through the film. This opened important doors for her and can be seen as the artist's first breakthrough.

Leshurr, who had already taken acting lessons in her youth, also worked in films in the following years, for example in 2010 in Fifty by director Ryan Vernava or in 2015 in Lapse of Honor by Rayna Campbell .

In 2010 Leshurr released the mixtape 01:21 AM and the EP Every Little Counts , a compilation of collaborations with other grime musicians such as Dot Rotten , P. Money and Mz. Bratt . In September Leshurr founded her own label Gutter Strut Limited to sell her music and the merchandising products she designed. In October 2015 she dissolved the company again.

Leshurr achieved her national breakthrough in 2011 when the video for her cover version of Chris Brown's Look at Me Now on Worldstarhiphop.com was viewed over 80,000 times in just one day. The first English daily newspapers started reporting on her and she was honored with an Official Mixtape Award for "Best Female Artist" . In the same year she released the EP Off the Lesh as well as the two mixtapes L Day and Friggin L, on which Look At Me Now is included. Friggin L also calls Leshurr a clothing line that she launched in 2011. Friggin L products , which Leshurr designs and sells itself, are extremely popular. She turned 2011, five video clips and in November their first single, which was released by Wizzy Wow produced Lego . The accompanying video was published in advance on October 30, 2011 by Hottesttracks.com. Lego was also released as an EP, along with some remixes.

In 2012, Leshurr released the 2000 and L mixtape. Again she received an Official Mixtape Award for "Best Female Artist" and an Urban Music Award in the same category. Leshurr plays concerts with the reggae band The Rasites . In addition to the classic roots reggae pieces by the Rasites, the band and Leshurr also played reggae versions of some pieces from Leshurr's repertoire, such as Lego and Look At Me Now . As part of the event series Bass Culture - The Influence Of Reggae On British Music , she gave her first concert in the United States with the band on March 17, 2012 in Austin (Texas) . Also as part of Bass Culture , Leshurr and the Rasites toured all of England in early 2013. Leshurr not only took part in the events as a life performer, she also took part in panel discussions as a speaker.

The Mona Leshurr EP and the L Yeah! Mixtape was released in 2013. The song Blazin ' , which Leshurr had recorded with the electro / dub step musician Torqux , reached number 1 on the MTV Base Charts and ousted Justin Timberlake from this position. On August 10th of that year, Leshurr performed at the BBC Classic Urban Prom with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall . Lady Leshurr played Blazin ' , Look At Me Now and Let The Dogs Run Wild . The BBC broadcast the concert nationwide.

In early 2014 Lil Bit Of Lesh was released , as well as videos for three songs (Chase The Dream, Been A Long Time, The Worst) from the mixtape.

After the release of nine mixtapes and four EPs, numerous collaborations with other artists, years of tireless touring and winning several awards, Leshurr's career was, despite initial chart successes and widespread acceptance and recognition, both in the hip-hop community and even in mainstream media, stalled. Although she had received offers from various record companies - including Atlantic Records , Kanye West's GOOD Music and Lil Wayne 's Young Money label - no contract had been concluded. Leshurr, who had always attached great importance to independence, had ultimately signed a contract with a management team, but the collaboration didn't work. Leshurr had achieved a lot, but there was no real commercial success. Despite her notoriety, she was still poor. Then an event occurred that shook her deeply and fell into a depression. A person close to her had gained access to her social media accounts and deleted them completely.

As a result, Leshurr more or less withdrew from the music scene for a year. Of course, she was not completely inactive during this time either. As a guest musician, she was involved in the production of at least 10 songs by other artists. She managed her colleague and friend Paigey Cakey . She traveled all over England with her Lady Leshurr's Rap College - a series of events where she teaches young people tips and tricks about making music. Leshurr got its own broadcast on Reprezent Radio . The Mona Leshurr Show premiered on May 3, 2014. Leshurr moderated the show every two weeks until at least the end of July. At the end of 2014 Leshurr released the song Shurraq on Youtube.

In early 2015, Leshurr finally reported back and on February 1st released Queen's Speech # 1 , the first in a series of freestyles that would prove to be groundbreaking for her career. On June 25, 2015, the first video Leshurrs ( Queen's Speech # 3 ) reached 1,000,000 views. This event led her to the song One Million Views , which was later released on the Queen's Speech EP . On July 30th of the same year, their first official website LYeah! on-line.

Leshurr achieved international fame as Queen's Speech # 4, which went viral on the Internet, after Samsung used the song in a commercial for the Galaxy S6 Edge + smartphone and its wireless charging station. In just three days, Queen's Speech # 4 had 18 million clicks on Facebook.

Leshurr also resumed her activities as a live performer in 2015. In the spring, Leshurr signed a contract with a new booking agency . On March 18, MN2S announce that Leshurr has signed with them. MN2S organized Leshurr's first tour as headliners. The Mad Ting Tour was sold out. Leshurr was nominated in three categories (Best Female Act, Best Hip Hop Act and Best Music Video) at the Urban Music Awards and won all three prizes.

In 2015, graffiti artists Chu , Gent 48 and Title painted an exterior wall of the six-story Custard Factory , an independent cultural and commercial center in Birmingham, as part of a nationwide campaign to promote the country's creative minds . Lady Leshurr was one of the four artists from the city depicted in the picture in oversized portraits. In the Custard Factory , Leshurr had taken part in music workshops and dance classes in her youth.

In spring 2016 Leshurr signed a contract with the Sony subsidiary RCA Records . The first releases for the label were the singles Where Are You Now? and Queen's Speech # 6 . On January 1, still under the Signet was already Gutter Strut , the Queen's Speech EP appeared on the Queen's Speech # 1-5 and one million views were included.

Leshurr is touring worldwide for the first time in 2016. She has given concerts and festivals all over England and numerous European countries, the United States and Canada, the Caribbean, Australia, Dubai and East Asia (Vietnam, Singapore, Hong Kong). On November 11, 2016, Leshurr performed at Jazz Voice , the opening gala of the London Jazz Festival . Accompanied by a 42-piece orchestra, she played Bam Bam and Queen's Speech 4 . The performance was badly received by the audience and critics.

In February 2016, the Guinness Brewery released a four-part series of videos in honor of music producer and civil rights activist John Hammond , who died in 1987, each with an artist paying tribute to Hammond . In one of the three-minute clips, Leshurr rapped about her respect for Hammond and its importance. The fashion designer Alexander Wang used Queen's Speech # 3 as background music for the fashion show where he presented his collection for spring / summer 2016. Leshurr was featured on the cover of the August issue of the New Musical Express . In November she received the prestigious MOBO Award for "Best Female Act".

On March 22, 2017, Leshurr thanked her fans on Facebook for the fact that the 21 videos on her YouTube channel had reached a total of 100,000,000 views. The EP Mode and the single Juice were released on April 29th of that year .

In 2019 Lady Leshurr was, alongside Lioness and Ms. Banks, one of three guest rappers on the Will.i.am- produced track Pretty Little Thing . She herself published the track Your Mr in 2019 . During the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, she published the track Quarantine Speech , based on her Queen's Speech series, as a video .

reception

For the most part, Leshurr is received very positively in the media. Matthew Trammel of the New Yorker called her a "nimble, mischievous copywriter." Angela H. Brown of Slug magazine praises the “perfect diction” of her “rhymes spat out at the speed of light”. Leshurr's lyrics are “extremely funny”, says Alexis Petridis of the Guardian , contained some of the “ heaviest punchlines in British rap” (Joylon Webber, Hunger Magazin ) and were “ delivered in perfect flow, ” says Milly McMahon of Complex UK .

Leshurr was included in the 2016 list of the “Five Artists of the Year” by the Internet platform Complete Music Update . According to MTV's Nikki Sehgal , Leshurr “set the bar incredibly high for female MCs ”. Ann Prowers from Esquire sees her as “proof that female rappers are defining the next era of hip hop”, while for Isabelle Hellyer from iD she is “living, breathing, rapping proof” that “you are both the class clown and the smartest person in the room ”can be.

Ludovic Hunter-Tilney from the Financial Times attests to the “charismatic, sharp-tongued” Leshurr “precision, playfulness and perfect timing”. Rahmon Agbaje of Keakie TV thinks her "funny, cheeky and extremely talented" and Ben Ratliffjan of the New York Times calls her a "fresh, proud" and "nimble rapper". For Mosi Reeves of Rolling Stone , the “boisterous rapper” makes an “exciting sound”, and Sam Moore of the New Musical Express considers Leshurr “one of the most exciting and thrilling rap talents”.

Vogue's Marjon Carlos calls Leshurr "Britain's hottest rapper". For T: P of Bespoke Magazine she is “one of the best British grime MCs” and for the organizers of the SXSW Festival “one of the best voices of her generation”. Guardian's Paul Lester finds "their music - their whole approach - a pleasure" ; Q Magazine's Rupert Home , Mic Magazine's Chris Riotta and MTV Australia called Leshurr the "Queen of Grime"; Gracie Taylor of the New Zealand Herald and Milly McMahon of Complex Magazine called her the "Queen of British Rap".

Biographical and personal life

Lady Leshurr was born Melesha Katrina O'Garro in the Kingshurst housing estate in Solihull near Birmingham and grew up with her parents, a brother and two sisters under one roof. Ten other brothers and one other sister lived across the city of Birmingham. Leshurr describes her family environment as "violent and isolated". The relationship with her "very strict, very violent" father was always broken and she tried to avoid him. However, there is a close relationship with the mother. She used the income Leshurr made with Queen`s Speech # 4 to finance a house for her mother.

Leshurr attended Archbishop Grimshaw Catholic School in Solihull. She was a good student, except at math. She mostly used the math lessons to write texts.

Before starting her career, she worked as a security guard at concerts and football matches. She also worked for the fast food chain Subway as a "sandwich artist", as the company calls its sales staff.

Leshurr has lived in London since 2013 . She is unmarried and has no children.

Remarks

  1. All of the sources we have checked give 1988 as the year of birth. Only Melesha O'Garro's entry in the British commercial register mentions 1987 as the year of birth.
  2. In an interview with the Guardian , Leshurr reports that during a screening of the film there were arguments between different gangs and stabbings. This is obviously a rumor, as nothing corresponding can be found in other press reports about the non-performance of 1 Day . Compare for example articles in the Birmingham Mail , the Daily Express or the Independent
  3. 01 21 is the phone code for Leshurr's hometown Birmingham.
