Sister Nancy
Sister Nancy, also known as Muma Nancy (born January 2, 1962 as Ophlin Russell-Myers in Kingston , Jamaica ), is the stage name of Ophlin Russell-Myers. She is considered the world's first female dancehall - deejay and was the dominant female voice of the dancehall scene for over two decades. Her most successful song Bam Bam received awards from the BBC and the Observer .
biography
Sister Nancy grew up as one of fifteen siblings. Her older brother Robert also achieved fame as a dancehall deejay under the stage name Brigadier Jerry .
During her teenage years, she frequently tried her hand at various sound systems in Kingston as a deejay, until producer Winston discovered Riley Sister Nancy in 1980 and took him to his studio for test recordings. This resulted in her first single called "Papa Dean" . This became a great success in Jamaica. After becoming known through the publication, Sister Nancy was the first female dancehall deejay to receive an invitation to Reggae Sunsplash , the largest dancehall and reggae festival in the world, which was broadcast worldwide. This also gave her international fame. After further productions and collaborations with well-known artists such as Yellowman , with whom she released the album "The Yellow, The Purple And The Nancy" on Greensleeves Records together with Deejay Fathead , her debut album "One, Two" was released in 1982 on the Techniques Records label which was produced by Winston Riley. The album also contained the hit "Bam Bam" , which was previously released as a single . At live concerts, she often performed with her brother and his Jahlove Music Sound System . With him she went on her first European tour, where she played a critically acclaimed concert at Brixton Town Hall in London. In 1996, Sister Nancy moved to New Jersey in the United States . Her main job is in the banking sector . In an interview in 2002, she said that despite her job, music was her top priority ( "music is first love" ). In 2006 Sister Nacy worked with Canadian producer Rcola and released a drum 'n' bass version of their song "Bam Bam" . The song was also used in the film Belly and the video game Skate . In 2007 the third album with the name "Sister Nancy Meets Fireproof" which was mixed by djMush1 was released on the Special Potato Records label. djMush1 also produces the songs for the New York ska band The Slackers . That same year, Sister Nancy received awards from the BBC and The Observer for her early hit "Bam Bam" .
Sister Nancy has been married since the early eighties and has a daughter who was born in 1987. She lives with her family in New Jersey where she works as a banker.
