Sister Carol (born January 15, 1959 in Kingston , Jamaica ) is a Jamaican reggae singer and actress . She also appears under other stage names, for example as "Black Cinderella" or "Mother Culture". Her real name is Carol Theresa East .

Life

Carol first grew up in the Kingston district of Denham Town. When she was 14, her family moved to Brooklyn , New York . Her father, Howard East, worked on Radio Jamaica RJR 94 FM and contributed to the recording of Studio One . In 1981, the year she graduated from City College of New York , Carol gave birth to her first child.

In the early 1980s, Robert Russell, better known as " Brigadier Jerry ", advised her to chat instead of sing. After winning several competitions in New York and her homeland, she went on tour with the meditations . In 1983 her debut album Liberation for Africa was released . With her second album Black Cinderella from 1984 she became better known and later founded her own music label with the same name. Her album Lyrically Potent was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album . In the 2000s she returned to Jamaica, where she lives in St. Ann County .

In February 2015 the reggae band New Kingston released the album Kingston City , on which Sister Carol can be heard in the piece Conquer Dem .
