Gyptian (* 25. October 1983 in Saint Andrew Parish as a diaper Beneto Edwards ) is a Jamaican reggae - singer .

life and career

Edwards grew up with his parents in the rural King Weston District. His father, a Rastafarian , brought him into contact with his culture and music at an early age, while his mother, who is a Seventh-day Adventist , took him to church as a child and noticed his talent for singing there at an early age. As a young man, he met the producer Ravin Wong from Portmore with his father, who was also part of the music business .

Gyptian recorded his 2005 debut single Serious Times in Wong's studio . The song combines "hypnotic Nyahbinghi Drums" (David Jeffries, Allmusic ) with a text that calls for an end to violence and crime. The song became a number one hit in Jamaica and made Gyptian famous in one fell swoop. As a result, he received numerous offers from various producers who wanted to work with him, but Gyptian declined a lot, among other things because he did not want to have anything to do with Gun Talk.

His debut album My Name Is Gyptian was released in 2006 by VP Records and offered a mixture of modern roots reggae and lovers rock . In 2008 I Can Feel Your Pain followed with a stronger contemporary R&B influence .

In 2010 he landed another hit with Hold You ( Hold Yuh ), several remixes and the album, also called Hold You , followed. The song and the album were also international hits. After I Can Feel Your Pain was already in the top 10 of the US Billboard Reggae Album Charts, Gyptian's Hold You not only reached number 2 in the reggae album charts, but also a 186th place in the general Billboard 200 album charts. The single made it to number 16 on the UK singles chart and number 77 on the Billboard Hot 100 . On October 20, 2010 Gyptian won the award in the Best Reggae Act category at the MOBO Awards in Great Britain , and on November 10, 2010 he received the Soul Train Music Award for Best Reggae Artist 2010 in the USA .
