Wax was the name of a pop duo in the 1980s. It consisted of former 10cc musician Graham Gouldman and singer Andrew Gold . In the USA they were listed as Wax UK .
Band history
While Gouldman was with 10cc from the beginning, Gold was still a successful solo musician in the 1970s and was a guest musician, co-composer and producer on the band's album Ten Out of 10 (1981). From this acquaintance, the two-man project Wax developed after the end of 10cc.
At first the group called itself World in Action . But when the first single Don't break my heart and a produced album called Victoria were very unsuccessful, they changed the name to Common Knowledge . This group name was also unsuccessful, so the name was changed to Wax for the third time . The album produced so far was initially not released any further.
In the fall of 1985, the two released their first album Magnetic Heaven . Her single Right Between the Eyes only reached lower positions in the charts in the spring of 1986, but it was a big radio hit. In general, Wax had a number of radio hits with Shadows of Love , American English , In Some Other World , Wherever You Are and Anchors Aweigh between 1986 and 1989, but record sales lagged far behind. Besides Right Between the Eyes was (Building A) Bridge to Your Heart in 1987 to their biggest hit, which reached the only the German single sales charts and landed on number 5 on the airplay charts. Both songs are still frequently played radio classics today.
When their third album 100,000 in Fresh Notes (1988) did not bring great commercial success either, Gouldman and Gold separated and went back to basics: Gouldman was at the reunification of 10cc, Gold joined his old colleagues from the Band Bryndle together.
In 1998 Gold re-released the first created and hitherto unknown album under the successful band name Wax and the title common knowledge.com and added four new songs that he had recorded in his home studio. A collection of outtakes and rarities, Wax Bikini , was published on Gold's website in 2000.
Gold died in the USA in the summer of 2011.
