Sir Alexander James Peacock (born June 11, 1861 in Creswick , Victoria , Australia , † October 7, 1933 in Creswick) was several times minister and three times Prime Minister of the Australian state of Victoria.

Life

The entstammende from a Scottish family Peacock married on January 1, 1901 at the founding of the Commonwealth of Australia , Millie Gertrude Holden (1870-1948), the daughter of an auctioneer. The couple had no children.

Peacock was a teacher in Creswick from a young age, then lived for a few years as a commercial clerk in Melbourne before joining a major mine manager in Creswick. He then bought some gold mines himself and had stores in Creswick, Prahran , Ballarat and Melbourne.

From 1889 Peacock was a member of the parliament of the state of Victoria, from 1890 several times Minister ( Minister of Labor and Public Instruction ) and in the years 1901-1902, 1914-1917 and 1924 three times Prime Minister of the state of Victoria. Most recently he was speaker of the House of Representatives from 1928 to 1933.

The public nicknamed Peacock "Laughing Premier" because of his loud, infectious laugh.

Peacock was a brother in the Masonic Lodge Holden Research Circle No. 2, Parkdale in Creswick.

His wife, Millie Peacock , became the first woman to serve in the Victoria State Chamber of Deputies in 1933 after the death of her husband and ten years after the introduction of passive women's suffrage, and immediately took over her husband's office as Speaker of the House of Representatives until 1935.
