James Service

James Service (born November 27, 1823 in Kilwinning , Scotland , † April 13, 1899 ) was an Australian politician and the twelfth Premier of Victoria .

biography

Service was born in Kilwinning as the son of Robert Service. As a young man he worked in a tea and coffee shop in Glasgow . In 1853 he came to Melbourne and worked there as a company representative. In the following year he successfully made the leap into business by founding his own company. He had James Ormond as a corporate partner.

Service was assigned a seat in that House of Parliament until August 1859 at a Victorian legislative assembly in Melbourne. This was the beginning of a political career in which he still took on numerous tasks; u. a. he became chairman of local banks and was also active as treasurer.

Service decided in 1886 to withdraw from active politics.
