Ted Baillieu
Ted Baillieu (born July 31, 1953 as Edward Norman Baillieu) is an Australian politician and belongs to the Liberal Party . He was the opposition leader of the state of Victoria and a member of the lower house of Victoria. From December 2010 to March 2013, as Prime Minister of Victoria, he headed a conservative-liberal coalition government.
Baillieu grew up in Toorak , a suburb of Melbourne . In Melbourne he first attended the Melbourne Grammer School and then the University of Melbourne . After graduating, he worked successfully as an architect. He is also currently one of Victoria's wealthiest politicians with a portfolio that includes more than 30 companies, including Coles Myer and BHP Billiton . He also supports charitable organizations such as the Epilepsy Foundation of Victoria .
Baillieu moved into the parliament of Victoria in 1999 as a member of the electorate from Hawthorn , a district of Melbourne, and has since been a permanent member of the Liberal Party in the first row of the lower house. Even before his election he was a civil servant at the state and federal level. The 1999 election was won by Steve Bracks with the Australian Labor Party , who thereby became Prime Minister of Victoria.
Ted Baillieu has held several positions as shadow minister in parliament since 1999 :
- Shadow Minister for Tertiary Education and Training (1999-2001)
- Shadow Minister for Gaming (July 2000 - August 2002)
- Shadow Minister for Planning (September 2001 - May 2006)
Rumors circulated for months that Baillieu would chair the Liberal Party in Victoria. On May 8, 2006, four days after Robert Doyle announced his resignation, he was finally elected by the party as opposition leader without resistance. On November 25, 2006, the Liberal Party, led by Ted Baillieu, lost the election in Victoria.
In 2010, Baillieu's party alliance won the election in Victoria, Ted Baillieu then became Prime Minister and successor to John Brumby on December 2 . In March 2013, Baillieu had to resign in the course of a corruption scandal, he was followed by Denis Napthine in office.
Ted Baillieu is married and has three children with his wife Robyn.
