Luis Eduardo Aute (2016)

Luis Eduardo Aute Martínez (born September 13, 1943 in Manila , Philippines - † April 4, 2020 in Madrid ) was a Spanish poet , cantautor ( songwriter ), artist and filmmaker who was part of the heterodox songwriting movement in Francoist Spain in the 1960s and 1970s Nueva canción was.

Life

Aute was born in 1943 in the Philippines to a Catalan father and Filipino mother. In 1954 the family living in Manila moved to Barcelona and later to Madrid. There he attended the monastery school Colegio Nuestra Señora de las Maravillas , which should shape his negative attitude towards the institution of the Catholic Church . Aute made his first serious attempts at painting and music as early as 1954. From 1962 he often stayed in Paris , where he took the opportunity to read films and books that were banned in Spain . From the mid-1960s he achieved initial successes with his painting, including taking part in the Biennale de Paris (1965), the Bienal Internacional de Artes de São Paulo (1967), the Concurso nacional de Bellas Artes (1974) and participated in the international art fair Arco 83 in Madrid. After writing lyrics only for the singer Massiel at first , he released his first single in 1967 ( Don Ramón and Made in Spain ). In 1968 he achieved unexpectedly overwhelming success with the songs Rosas el el mar and Aleluya N ° 1 . The media hype was followed by a complete withdrawal from the music business by 1972. It was not until 1978 that the singer-songwriter, suffering from stage fright, performed live in front of an audience for the first time. Especially at the time of the Transición (the transition) from the Franco dictatorship to democracy at the end of the 1970s, Aute became a figure of identification among young people. Some of his songs (e.g. Al Alba , Las cuatro y diez , De paso etc.) have shaped the collective memory of an entire generation. His musical occupation was mainly responsible for the popularity of the versatile artist. In addition to poetry and songs, his work also included painting and film. From the 1980s, however, he had only moderate commercial success.

After suffering a stroke in August 2016, he spent two months in a coma. After that he could not be seen on any concert stage. He died in Madrid in spring 2020 at the age of 76.

Works

Autes songs and poems, which, with the exception of the satirical and socially critical texts, primarily deal with topics such as loneliness, fear, the meaning of existence and death, but also with the topics of love, lust and eroticism, testify to an extraordinary poetic sensitivity both formally and in terms of content . He liked to use an almost cryptic language, often even one modeled on the spirituality of mysticism, which could also take on surrealistic traits. The palabra con doble filo (the ambiguous word) was always in the foreground with Aute; the ambiguity is one of the main features of his poetry: "Nunca he creído ni en fórmulas ni en mensajes / me gusta más jugar a la contradicción" ("I have never believed in formulas and clear messages, I like it better to accept contradiction." play ”) (from the song A vivir , De par en par ). The constant contradictions of everyday life and the negation of irrefutable, universally valid truths is one of the central leitmotifs of his poetry.
