Musical Youth is a British reggae - pop - band that had some success in the early 1980s. After a long period of separation, two of the former band members are now musically active again under this name.

Band history

Musical Youth was founded in 1979 in Birmingham . The initiative came from Fred Waite , who was a member of the reggae band The Techniques in the 1960s . In the early days of the group he sang together with his sons Junior (* 1967) and Patrick (* 1968) and their school friends Michael (* 1969) and Kelvin Grant (* 1971), also a pair of brothers. All four boys contributed vocals; Instruments played by Kelvin Grant ( guitar ), Junior Waite ( drums ) and Patrick Waite ( bass ). The quintet performed in local pubs and released the first single Political on a small label .

This enabled the group to get an appearance on the BBC radio show by John Peel . After this gig, Musical Youth's popularity soared, which brought the band a record deal with MCA Records . At that time, Fred Waite retired as lead singer; Dennis Seaton (* 1967) joined the band in his place . With him the single Pass the Dutchie was recorded, which was a defused version of Pass the Kouchie , a reggae hit by the Mighty Diamonds . In place of the “Kouchie” (a joint ) there was the “Dutchie”, the endearing word for a Dutch oven . The song developed into a worldwide success: It became a number one hit in the British charts , was number two in Germany and number ten in the USA . The single sold more than four million times and was nominated for a Grammy . Another huge hit was Never Gonna Give You Up (number six in the UK) the following year ; The group also took on the title Unconditional Love with Donna Summer , which made it into the UK's Top 20.

After a few not so successful recordings, the split finally took place in 1985 when Dennis Seaton left the band. The plans for a reunification were stopped abruptly when Patrick Waite, who had meanwhile been charged with drug offenses, died on March 2, 1993. He had suffered from heart problems for a long time.

The Grant brothers remained as musically active as the soloist Dennis Seaton, who also founded his own band with 'XMY'. In 2003, Musical Youth reunited as part of a 1980s nostalgia tour. In 2005 only Dennis Seaton and Michael Grant appeared together under this name.
