Luca Carboni, 2009

Luca Carboni (born October 12, 1962 in Bologna ) is an Italian cantautore . Over 20 years after his first album was released in 1983, he's still active and well known. What is striking about his music is the empathetic and thoughtful style that dominates most of the lyrics.

Career

The beginnings

Luca Carboni was born in Bologna on October 12, 1962. He began to be interested in music at an early age. From the age of six he learned to play the piano and enjoyed listening to music by Italian musicians such as Lucio Battisti and Francesco De Gregori .

In 1976, at the age of 14, he and friends founded the band Teobaldi Rock , in which he worked as a guitarist and composer. After several concerts between 1976 and 1980, they released their first single in 1981, but the band members split up immediately afterwards.

Carboni did not give up his passion for music and looked for new ways. When the band Stadio accidentally found one of his lyrics, which he had left lying in the Osteria da Vito , which was a meeting place for many songwriters and musicians at the time, he had a good opportunity: Stadio asked Luca Carboni to write a piece for their first Write album. He composed the piece Navigando Controvento , which appeared on the self-titled album Stadio in 1982 .

The first two albums

With the support of Stadio frontman Gaetano Curreri Carboni In 1983, his first album, ... e intanto Dustin Hoffman non sbaglia un film record, and a year later on the label RCA publish. The album itself sold 30,000 times, the single Ci stiamo sbagliando went over the counter another 50,000 times. It was particularly successful with the younger audience, who found themselves in their worldview and recognized their own fears and desires.

In 1985, Luca Carboni's second album , Forever , was released, with over 70,000 copies sold, surpassing the success of the previous album. Forever is to be seen as a supplement to the first Carboni album, as it reuses the same stylistic devices, but a clear development can be determined on the basis of the lyrics: the points of view are much more mature, the lyrics also deal with social issues and contain subtle irony. The individual arrangements are also made more complicated.

After the tour that followed, Carboni took a creative break to gather new incentives and ideas. During this time he also began to draw and paint.

The first success in public

In 1987 the album Luca Carboni was released after a long production period . The first single, Silvia lo sai , a song that tells a love drama of a young person in an extremely compassionate way, was, like Farfallina , the second release, a great success. The latter describes the consuming desire for love. These two singles brought the album to over 700,000 copies sold and Carboni for the first time in the Italian charts (straight to number one). On this CD there is space for romance as well as for the equally successful single Vieni a vivere con me , but you can also find the irony of the early days.

Through this album, which was also released in 1988 with Spanish lyrics, and the subsequent, to date longest tour Carbonis, he achieved a high level of awareness among the Italian population. At the time, however, his shyness helped him to keep the media out of his mind as much as possible and thus to keep details about his personality hidden from the public. Despite his notoriety, few critics were positive about his personality and music. Many criticized his work for the lack of an ideological or political stance and classified him as a pure " sex symbol " that "is only good for romantic little songs."

Silenziose persone and Carboni

The next album, Carbonis , Persone silenziose , which came out in 1989, was held in a more thoughtful style than its predecessor, with particular emphasis on the melodious sound of the individual songs. This fitted in with the simultaneous isolation from the media and the public. Here Carboni chose the “silent people”, that is, those people who are not and never will be in the light of attention, as symbols for values that seem irreversibly lost in certain social classes. In line with this, Carboni minimized the promotion of the album in the media, which, however, could not diminish the sales success of over 500,000 copies.

Two more years later, Carboni released his most successful album to date: Carboni . The single Ci vuole un fisico bestiale , with its ironic portrayal of today's consumer society, became a great public success, as was the melancholy piece Mare mare , which became the summer hit of the year. Other very successful singles were La mia città and the love song Le storie d'amore . Moreover Alzando gli occhi al cielo to mention wonders in the Carboni: "how do the Mafiosi, nothing to regret; how do politicians manage not to change sides ”- and that in the very year in which the well-known Italian lawyers and mafia hunters Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino were killed in two assassinations .

The album was followed by the Ci-vuole-un-fisico-bestiale tour, which ended with a total of eight concerts with Jovanotti , from which the CD Diario Carboni emerged with live and studio recordings. This was followed in 1993 by a first European and another Italian tour; In 1994, after Diario Carboni appeared in ten European countries, he set off on another tour to neighboring countries.

New experiences

Instead of trying to repeat the success of the previous album, Carboni then devoted himself to more minimalist music and released the album MONDO world welt monde in 1995. The new CD was recorded with a band in quick succession, which is immediately noticeable in some songs such as the later single Inno nazionale , which turns against all forms of egoism and racism , which sound very rough, almost without post-production , and are composed almost entirely of hard, deep guitar tones with drums. Other tracks like Non è , which mocks today's appearance-focused society, sound clearer and have a better recording quality. This obvious inhomogeneity is criticized by some music critics, but it seems more as if this was a stylistic device intended by the artist.

In 1996 another tour followed in Italy, and the Spanish version Mundo of the album was released in collaboration with Miguel Bosé .

Carboni's minimalism reached its climax with the album Carovana (1998), which was produced by the artist himself on the computer at home in search of lighter, atmospheric sounds. The lively single Le ragazze was the only exception among the songs, which otherwise seemed like a slow, whispered narrative throughout. This very experimental album was followed by an equally experimental tour, during which the Carboni gave a series of concerts with the OFI chamber orchestra .

A year later he went on a tour of the Italian stadiums again. The compilation Il tempo dell'amore was released with two previously unpublished songs, La mia ragazza and Il tempo dell'amore . Another European tour followed in 2000.

From 2001 until today

In 2001 the album LU * CA was released , which again focused on melancholy. All songs are dedicated to Carboni's son Samuele, with the exception of Voglia di piangere , which relates to the death of his mother, and Stellina (dei cantautori) , which deals with the disappearance of the producer Renzo Cremonini. The first single is Mi ami davvero , a declaration of love that is also intended to criticize today's society. This song quickly brought the album to the top of the charts. In 2002, more releases followed, first La nostra storia , a ballad, then le parole and Stellina (dei cantautori) .

At the end of 2002 a DVD was released containing ten selected videos from all of Carboni's publications. In 2003 Live was released , the second live CD with 29 recordings from 1992 to 2002 as well as the previously unreleased song Settembre . In 2004 Carboni started a new tour of Italy.

On September 29, 2006, … le band si sciolgono was released , on which Carboni could be heard together with Pino Daniele , Tiziano Ferro and Gaetano Curreri , the singer of Stadio , among others . The compilation followed in 2007 … una rosa per te! , with 36 love songs by the musician, including the previously unreleased C'è . With the cover Ho visto anche degli zingari felici (the original is by Claudio Lolli ), in collaboration with Riccardo Sinigallia , he announced the new album Musiche ribelli in 2008 , which was released in early 2009. It contained a lot of cover versions of well-known Italian songs from the 1970s.

On September 13, 2011, the next studio album, Senza titolo , was released, preceded by the single Fare le valigie . In 2013, Carboni published the compilation Fisico & politico , on which he had re-recorded some of his songs as duets (including Persone silenziose together with Tiziano Ferro ); the title song was created in collaboration with rapper Fabri Fibra . In 2015 the successful single Luca lo stesso announced the new album Pop-up produced by Michele Canova Iorfida . The second single was Bologna è una regola , a song about his hometown.
