Claudio Lolli (born March 28, 1950 in Bologna - † August 17, 2018 ) was an Italian cantautore (songwriter) and writer . His work is closely linked to the left protest movement in Italy in the 1970s.

Life

Lolli began his professional music career with the support of Francesco Guccini . He became known in 1972 with the LP Aspettando Godot ('Waiting for Godot', based on the play of the same name ) and the single Borghesia ('bourgeoisie'), a song of ridicule on petty-bourgeois morality. In the following five years he played a major role as the musical exponent of the protest movement of those years. La ballata di Pinelli ('The Ballad of Pinelli'), for example, is a song about the anarchist Giuseppe Pinelli, who died under mysterious circumstances in a police station in 1969 . With Un uomo in crisi (1973) and Canzoni di rabbia (1975), the musician subsequently concluded his first trilogy of albums.

In 1976 he recorded his most famous LP, Ho visto anche degli zingari felici ('I also saw happy gypsies '). With the first song of the same name on the LP - the gypsies, so to speak as "noble savages", served as a metaphor for the adolescents who were emphatically anti-bourgeois and who were the only ones to oppose the increasing alienation - he set the anti-authoritarian scene around the University of Bologna , at that time the Stronghold of movement, a monument. The LP was initially u. a. known about the "free" radio stations (eg. Radio Alice ), which at that time in Italy as media of autonomia - created scene. After this album, however, Lolli did not renew his recording contract with EMI , but concluded the first phase of his music production on the independent label Ultima Spiaggia with the album Disoccupate le strade dai sogni .

He soon returned to EMI and initiated an “intellectual” phase with extranei in 1980 , which was far less popular with the audience. After completing his literature studies , Lolli began teaching in high schools. Nevertheless, he did not give up his activity as a cantautore, even if his record production was very irregular. In the 1990s, he was also more prominent as a writer. Lolli's last book, Lettere Matrimoniali , was published in 2013, his last studio album, Il grande freddo, in 2017. For this he was awarded the Targa Tenco by Club Tenco for the best album of the year.

In terms of music, Claudio Lolli was not a “purist” songwriter. In addition to the simple songs that are typical of the genre, accompanied by acoustic guitar, there are also saxophone and electric guitar sounds, longer solos and string arrangements. As was the case with many back then, his texts were inspired by existentialism , by topics such as alienation , isolation and nonconformism; However, Claudio Lolli was one of the most politicized cantautori , who were also influenced by Marxism in their thinking, and in his songs also dealt with people and events from contemporary history.

Claudio Lolli died in his hometown of Bologna in 2018 at the age of 68.
