Philippine Auguste Amalie von Reden , b. Freiin Knigge (born November 25, 1775 in Kassel , † December 10, 1841 in Hameln ) was a German writer and translator . She was the daughter of Adolph Freiherr Knigge and Henriette von Baumbach .

Life

The baptismal names Philippine Auguste Amalie are a reference to the Landgrave Philippine von Hessen-Kassel , at whose court Adolph Knigge worked. Philippine von Reden grew up on the Baumbach estate in Nentershausen . Contrary to his general view of bringing up girls, Knigge himself taught his daughter science subjects and languages. She wrote the book An Attempt at Logic for Women when she was 15 .

After the death of her father, Philippine married Lieutenant Colonel Claus Friedrich von Reden on March 26, 1798 (* November 3, 1774, † June 6, 1840). Philippine von Reden moved with her husband, mother and a foster sister first to Clausthal , then to Wendlinghausen and finally to Hameln .
