Canyon is a city and seat of the county seat of Randall County in the US state of Texas in the United States . The city is home to West Texas A&M University and the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum .
geography
The city is located in the northwest of Texas, in the so-called Texas Panhandle , about 15 km south of Amarillo and has a total area of 12.8 km² without any significant water surface.
history
The city was founded in the spring of 1889 by Lincoln Guy Conner. When Randall County was founded in July 1889, the young city was chosen to be the county's capital. First, a two-room log cabin was built to serve as the town hall, church and community hall. From August 1890, several newspapers appeared in the following years, some of which, however, only had a short life. In 1896 the newspaper "Stayer" was founded, which was renamed "Canyon Ciry News" in 1903 and appeared from 1907 as "Randall County News". Canyon was also connected to the telephone network in 1896.
Canyon experienced a further boom when the Pecos and Northern Texas Railway was built through the town in 1898. As a result, Canyon developed into an important loading point for cattle and cotton and, due to the numerous cowboys passing through, it became a pub center. By 1900 WC Kenyon ran seven saloons in the town. In 1904, when Canyon had 530 residents, the first bank was founded. In 1906 the town received town charter, and in 1909 a stone-walled town hall was built.
