Stéphane Morin (born March 27, 1969 in Montreal , Québec , † October 6, 1998 in Oberhausen ) was a Canadian ice hockey player . During his career he played for the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League and the Berlin Capitals in the DEL .
Career
Morin first played for three years from 1986 to 1989 in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League , one year with the Cataractes de Shawinigan and two with the Saguenéens de Chicoutimi . In his final season, when he scored 186 points in 70 games, he was voted Most Valuable Player in the League.
After the center had been selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1989 by the Quebec Nordiques in the third round in 43rd position, he received his first professional contract for the 1989/90 season . In the following three seasons, the Canadian played 84 NHL games for the Nordiques, but was also repeatedly used in the farm team in the American Hockey League . After the expiry of his contract, Morin moved as a free agent to the Vancouver Canucks , where he came only sporadically to missions in the NHL between 1992 and 1994 . From the 1994/95 season, Morin ran exclusively in the International Hockey League at various clubs. There he immediately managed to win the Leo P. Lamoureux Memorial Trophy , the title of the best points collector in the league.
For the 1998/99 season Morin moved to Europe and signed a contract with the Berlin Capitals from the DEL , where he was signed as one of the key players in the squad. On October 6, 1998 in the championship game against Revierlöwen Oberhausen , he collapsed on the bench and suffered a fatal cardiac arrest .
