The Aréna Jacques Plante is a multi-purpose arena in the Canadian city of Shawinigan , Quebec Province . It was opened in 1937 and has 2,524 seats (maximum 3,700 seats). The home games of the Cataractes de Shawinigan , an ice hockey team , were played in the arena from 1969 to 2008 . The hall is named after the ice hockey goalkeeper Jacques Plante , who died in 1986, and was previously called the Shawinigan Municipal Auditorium . The arena was closed in December 2008 and the team moved to their new home ground with the Center Bionest de Shawinigan .
