Joseph Romeo Steve Penney (born February 2, 1961 in Sainte-Foy , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who played for the Montréal Canadiens and Winnipeg Jets in the National Hockey League from 1978 to 1988 .

Career

Steve Penney began his career as a hockey player with the Shawinigan Cataractes , for which he was active from 1978 to 1981 in the Canadian junior league QMJHL . During this period he was selected in the eighth round of the 1980 NHL Entry Draft as a total of 166 players by the Montréal Canadiens . For the team from Québec , he made his debut in the National Hockey League in the 1983/84 season , after having worked exclusively for their farm teams , the Flint Generals from the International Hockey League and the Nova Scotia Voyageurs from American Hockey in the two previous seasons League was used. With Montréal, the Canadian won the prestigious Stanley Cup for the first and only time as a back-up goalkeeper in the 1985/86 season . In 18 appearances, he sat a total of 30 times on the bench and had actually qualified due to an injury that his name would be engraved on the Stanley Cup, which Montréal waived. Nevertheless, he received a Stanley Cup ring and can be seen in the official Stanley Cup photo.

On August 19, 1986 Penney was given together with the rights to Jan Ingman in exchange for Brian Hayward to the Winnipeg Jets . In the Canadians, however, he could not prevail and only came to 15 appearances in the NHL in two seasons. He was also in a total of 32 games for their AHL farm teams Sherbrooke Canadiens and Moncton Hawks between the posts.
