German Handball Championship 1948 - Open Championship of the British Zone of Occupation

The German handball championship in 1949 was the championship finals of the strongest clubs in the three western occupation zones and West Berlin . It was played on February 20, 1949 in Münster . The improvised venue was a somewhat rebuilt riding hall.

The organizer was the predecessor association of the German Handball Federation (DHB), the German Working Committee for Handball (DAH). The tournament was - after the open championship of the British Zone in Bremen in 1948 - the second interzonal final tournament in indoor handball for men after the end of the Second World War .

The German champions became RSV Mülheim , who defeated the Flensburg TB 9: 6 in the final. The Mülheim lawn athletes won their first and only championship title in indoor handball.

This championship, like that of the previous year, is unofficial because the DHB, which hosted the upcoming finals from 1950 , was only founded in October 1949. The umbrella organization did not recognize the two interzonal tournaments as championships and did not include the title holders in its statistics.

mode

The eight strongest teams in the occupation zones met in two preliminary round groups and played everyone against everyone in a round-robin tournament . The group winners played the German champions in a final; there were no placement games. Since there were not yet regional championships in indoor handball in all parts of the country, through which the qualification for the final round should run from 1950, it is no longer known in detail, according to which criteria the participants had qualified.

In preliminary group A, RSV Mülheim ( German field handball champion 1947 ), TV Eintracht Hagen (Westphalia champion), SV Police Hamburg (with Flensburg TB most successful north German club) and from the French zone the sports community Haßloch (southwest German champion 1949 ) met from the British zone ) each other.

In the other group played from the British zone of the Flensburg TB (with SV Police Hamburg most successful north German club), the TuS Eintracht Minden (Westphalian Cup Champion), as well as from the American zone of the TSV 1896 Rintheim (South German Champion 1949) and from the American sector Berlin's winner of the first interzonal championship last year, SG Wilmersdorf (corresponds to Berliner SV 1892; Berlin champions 1948 (hall and field)).

The playing time was 2 × 15 minutes.

Tournament course

Surprisingly, the RSV Mülheim narrowly prevailed in the group game against the more strongly rated Hamburg police club; in group B, Flensburg finished all its games as a clear winner and was thus slightly favored for the final. In the final it became clear that Flensburg had left more strength in the group games. Although they managed to equalize the half-time score of 4: 1 after the break to 5: 5; The TB had nothing to counter the final spurt of the Mülheimers to the final score of 9: 6.
