German handball championship 1952

The 1953 German handball championship was the fourth final round of the German men's indoor handball championship organized by the DHB . It was played in a final tournament in two preliminary and one final group.

The group games of the preliminary round took place on February 15, 1953 in the Killesberghalle in Stuttgart (group A) and in the hall at the radio tower in Berlin (group B), the final round was a week later, on February 22, 1953 in the Kieler Ostseehalle played in front of over 3,000 spectators.

The SV Police Hamburg dominated the entire tournament more clearly than in previous years, the team threw the most goals, conceded the fewest goals of all participants and was German handball champions for the fourth time in a row , the THW Kiel finished second in the final table Place and became runner-up.

mode

As in the previous year, eight teams were again qualified, the five championship teams of the regional associations, plus the runner-ups of the largest regional associations North, West and South. Otherwise, the DHB changed - as in every season so far - the host mode again:

For the first time, the finals were spread over two weekends and three different locations. On February 15, the participants played in two preliminary round groups in Berlin and Stuttgart, the first and second of each group qualified for participation in the final round, which this year was also designed as a round-robin tournament : the team leading in the final table was German champions .

In the preliminary round group A in Stuttgart, the SV Police Hamburg (Regional Champion North), TuS Eintracht Minden (Vice Champion West), TSV Rot 05 (Regional Champion South) and TSG Haßloch (Regional Champion Southwest) played.

In group B in Berlin, the THW Kiel (runner-up north), the RSV Mülheim (regional association master west), the police SV Berlin (state / regional master Berlin) and TSV Braunshardt (runner-up south) met each other.

The playing time in normal round games was 2 × 20 minutes. If there was a tie after the end of the round, play-offs were necessary for placement because - as was customary later - the goal difference or the direct comparison were not taken into account. In these play-off games, the playing time was 2 × 7.5 minutes.

Tournament course

Even in the preliminary round, the SV Hamburg Police left no doubts as to who should go into the final round as the favorite, only in the game against the southern champions from the Baden red a sensation seemed to arise, as the TSV Rot very quickly took a 2-0 lead and was able to defend this lead until shortly before the half-time break, only in the second half did the series champions from Hamburg clearly stand out. The decision as to who in this group is allowed to go to the final in Kiel apart from the hamburgers, however, had to be clarified in an additional short game; Minden prevailed against Haßloch.

In the preliminary round group B the decision was even more exciting, after the end of the preliminary round three teams had 4: 2 points. THW Kiel was then drawn as group winners, the decision game for second place was won by the police sports club from Berlin against Mülheim.
