German field handball championship 1952

The German field handball championship in 1953 was played in a final tournament between May 10 and June 28, 1953. The tournament was the fourth championship round in men's field handball organized by the DHB . The final took place on June 28, 1953 in front of 10,000 spectators on Kiel's Holsteinplatz .

The German champion was again the SV Police Hamburg , which had already won the indoor championship in the spring. Hamburg defeated THW Kiel in the final with 19:15 and won the fifth field handball championship title in their club's history, the third field title in a row.

mode

At its annual general meeting in 1952, the DHB decided to base the mode of the championship finals in 1953 on that of football. That means: instead of 16 as in the previous year, only eight teams were qualified for participation in the finals of the regional championships. These determined the participants in the final in two groups with back and forth games; Placement games were not held.

Group I: SV Hamburg Police (North German Champion, Defending Champion, German Champion (Halle) 1953 ), Frisch Auf Göppingen (South German Vice Champion), Reinickendorfer Füchse (Berlin Champion) and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (West German Vice Champion).

Group II was made up of: THW Kiel (North German Vice Champion), SV Harleshausen (South German Champion), RSV Mülheim (West German Champion) and TSG Haßloch (Southwest German Champion).

The playing time was 2 × 30 minutes.

Tournament course

The defending champion SV Police Hamburg prevailed in his group games and only gave one point to the Berlin champions. Particularly surprising was the clear success in Göppingen over the favored team Bernhard Kempas , where Hamburg only narrowly won last year. This year, on the other hand, the police club was already leading 11: 1 after 36 minutes, and the failure of Otto Maychrzak , who had to be carried unconscious from the field 20 minutes before the end of the match, could not prevent success.

The final opponent from Kiel, on the other hand, had more problems in his group, before the last matchday of the group stage the "Zebras" were still behind the South German champions from the Kassel district of Harleshausen , so they could no longer reach the final on their own. Harleshausen was defeated by RSV Mülheim on the last day of the match, so that it came to the North German final like 1950 and 1951.

Hamburg's victory in the final was primarily a success of the strong defense around Werner Vick , with Heinz Singer in goal as a secure backing.
