German field handball championship 1954

The German field handball championship 1955 was played in a final tournament between May 15 and May 30, 1955. The tournament was the sixth championship round in men's field handball organized by the DHB . The final took place on May 30, 1955 in front of 15,000 spectators in Hamburg's Hoheluft stadium.

The new German champion was SV Police Hamburg , which had already become runner-up in the indoor handball final in spring. The Hamburg "police" defeated SV Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the final with 15:12 and were able to celebrate the sixth field handball championship title in the club's history.

mode

The mode was drastically changed compared to the previous season, so that the duration of the tournament - with regard to the field handball world championship beginning at the end of June in Germany - was shortened from six to two weeks: Although eight teams competed against each other again, the DHB waived that time-consuming group stage with return legs. The teams played against each other in a simple elimination round in a knockout system , the four winning teams then determined the finalists in a semi-final; Placement games were not held.

The following eight teams had qualified as champions or runner-ups of the respective regional championships for participation in the finals:

North German Championship: THW Kiel (master), SV Police Hamburg (runner-up)
West German Championship: RSV Mülheim (champions), SV Bayer 04 Leverkusen (runner-up)
Southwest German Championship: SV Harleshausen (champions)
South German championship: TC Frisch Auf Göppingen (champion, defending champion, German champion (Halle) 1955 ), TSG Ketsch (runner-up)
Berlin state / regional championship: Reinickendorfer Füchse (champions)

The playing time was 2 × 30 minutes, in the event of a tie after regular playing time, an extension of 2 × 10 minutes was carried out.

Tournament course

The favored championship teams of the North German, West German and South German finals were surprisingly eliminated in the preliminary round, they were each defeated by their opponents in their own place. The reporter for the Hamburger Abendblatt called the Hamburg team a “sensation” in Göppingen against the team of the defending champion and indoor champion Frisch Auf Göppingen. The North German champion THW Kiel was already hopelessly behind the West German runner-up from Leverkusen with 10 goals (3:13) at half time, while the West German champion from Mülheim had to admit defeat to the Kassel suburbs from Harleshausen. Only the Berlin champion Reinickendorfer Füchse confirmed the expectations and outclassed the TSG Ketsch.

Leverkusen clearly prevailed against the Berlin champions in the semifinals after a balanced first half; SV Police Hamburg won the game at SV Harleshausen just in the last few minutes. In the final in Hamburg Leverkusen initially seemed superior, but could not translate this into goals, at halftime the Leverkusen were only just one goal ahead. The last seconds of the regular playing time were dramatic: At 12:11 for the police club Maychrzak rejected a penalty in the last minute and the Leverkusen team equalized in return. In overtime, the Hamburg team were more focused and used their chances, while the guests couldn't score any more.
