The German field handball championship in 1962 was played in a final tournament between September 23 and October 28, 1962. The tournament was the 13th championship round in men's field handball organized by the DHB . The final took place on October 28, 1962 in front of 25,000 spectators in Nuremberg , in the "Zabo" stadium of 1. FC Nuremberg .
The new German champion was TSV 1860 Ansbach , who had reached the final for the third time in a row and won the second field handball championship in the club's history. Ansbach defeated TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen 9: 8 in the final .
mode
16 teams competed against each other in an elimination tournament, this season with a new mode: the preliminary round (round of 16) was played as usual in the knockout system , in the intermediate round (quarter-finals) and in the semifinals, the winners of the respective pairings were for the first time in the first and return matches determined. The winners of the semi-finals contested the final, there were no official placement games.
The following 15 teams had qualified directly for the preliminary round of the tournament via the respective regional championships; the THW Kiel , German champions in 1962 for indoor handball had not qualified for the large field finals:
North German Championship:
West German Championship:
- TuS Lintfort (defending champion)
- TuS 05 Wellinghofen
- TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen
Southwest German Championship:
South German Championship:
- TSV 1860 Ansbach
- SG Leutershausen
- TSV Birkenau
Berlin state / regional championship:
In addition, the fourth team of the North German Championship, the Flensburg TB , came as the 16th team, who narrowly prevailed against the Berlin runner-up Police SV Berlin in a qualifying game on September 16 with a score of 9: 8.
The playing time was 2 × 30 minutes, in the event of a tie after regular playing time, an extension of 2 × 10 minutes was carried out.
Tournament course
While the defending champions from Lintfort prevailed confidently in the preliminary round, last year's runner-up, TSV Ansbach, needed the extension to a difficult success against the Dortmund club TuS Wellinghofen. The draw for the intermediate round brought together the finalists of the two previous years - Ansbach won both games against Lintfort, as well as the two semi-finals against Solingen. TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen advanced to the tournament's surprise team with the outstanding national player Herbert Lübking , who eliminated the Berlin champions BSV 1892 (preliminary round), the North German champions VfL Wolfsburg (intermediate round) and finally the Göppingen "Kempa-Buben" (semi-finals) could - however, Dankersen had to admit defeat in both the intermediate round and in the semifinals in one game each and only reached the final because of the better goal differences from home and return matches.
In a dramatic final - Dankersen led several times and kept the game open until the end - Ansbach finally won narrowly, not least because of the goalkeeper's good performance.
On the day before the final, on October 27, 1962, the two losing teams of the semi-finals - BSV Solingen and Frisch Auf Göppingen - competed in an unofficial match for third place; Frisch Auf won in Solingen with 9:13.
