German field handball championship 1951

The German field handball championship in 1952 was played in an elimination tournament with a group phase between May 18 and August 3, 1952; the tournament was the third championship round in men's field handball organized by the DHB . The final took place on August 3, 1952 in front of 22,000 spectators in the Duisburg Wedaustadion .

As in the previous year, the German champions were SV Hamburg Police , which had already won the indoor championship in spring. The Hamburgers defeated TuS Lintfort in the final with 14:10 and thus won the fourth field handball championship title in the club's history.

In the tournament break between the qualifying round and the intermediate round, the top players of the teams completed the preparation and tournament phase of the 1952 World Cup in field handball in Switzerland.

mode

The following 16 clubs were able to qualify for participation via the final round of the regional championships:

Initially, the game was played in the knockout system , the winners of the preliminary round moved directly into the intermediate round, but the losing teams were also able to reach the intermediate round via an additional qualifying round. Then twelve teams faced each other in the intermediate round, whose winners were qualified for the group stage of the last six teams. The respective winners of the two groups met in the final, placement games were not held.

The playing time was 2 × 30 minutes; in the event of a tie after regular playing time, the games were decided in extra time (2 × 10 minutes).

Tournament course

In the preliminary round, the favored teams prevailed - with one exception: of all things, the Hamburg police, the defending champion and winner of the indoor championship, was completely surprisingly defeated by the team from Bad Oeynhausen in front of only 1,500 spectators after a disappointing performance . However, the Hamburg team were able to keep their chances in the qualifying round in the runaway victory (2:23) in Nuremberg and finally prevailed in the group stage games. Particularly noteworthy was the tight 10:11 away win in Göppingen, which was only secured in the last few minutes of the game; at halftime the "police" were still 8: 5 behind against the team around Bernhard Kempa , the "dominant figure in German handball" of the early 1950s. After this game, angry spectators stormed the pitch and knocked down Hamburg's record goalscorer Otto Maychrzak and the referee, a "regrettable novelty in German handball", as the correspondent for the Hamburger Abendblatt wrote.

In the other group, each team recorded a victory and a defeat, so that the DHB set playoffs in which the TuS Lintfort had the upper hand. In the final, TuS was only able to keep up in the first half, after the break the superior condition of Hamburg prevailed, who could also rely on Maychrzak's throwing power: “Atom-Otto” scored seven of the 14 Hamburg hits.
