The Sessan Cup ( Swedish Sessan Cups ) is the challenge cup of an international team regatta of the same name , which is sailed with Nordic folk boats . The Sessan Cup dates back to 1952, making it the oldest trophy in an international racing series in this boat class.

The regatta

The Sessan Cup is a friendly team regatta, which is sailed with boats from the host regional folk boat fleet, which the guest helmsmen draw among themselves. While the helmsmen leave their own boat at home and only bring one more crew member and their own sails with them, the owner of the drawn boat usually completes the regatta crew as the third man. A team consists of two boats from a national association, a regional folk boat fleet or a club. The participants and thus the teams are officially nominated by their fleets or their association.

On the two days of the Sessan Cup, a total of four races will be sailed as so-called Fleetraces and the individual performances will be assessed as a team. The team with the lowest total number of points wins and can take the trophy home with them until the next time. At the beginning there was an individual winner, but today the best individual performance is no longer awarded.

The interesting thing about this concept is the friendly encounter. The mixed crews of local sailors and guests guarantee the dialogue between the nations and fleets. In addition, there is usually another effect: Newcomers or sailors from the lower ranks use the opportunity to sail with top international sailors.

The origin of the Sessan Cup goes back to the Göteborg International Regatta , which was first sailed in Gothenburg , Sweden, on September 13, 1952. The first winners were the team from Göteborgs Folkbåtsklubb , the first individual winner was the well-known Swedish boat designer Olle Enderlein from Norrköping.

In 1957, the shipowner Ulf Trapp donated the Sessan Cup for this regatta with the aim of awakening friendship and understanding among folk boat sailors across borders. The name Sessan Cup is derived from the name of the Sessan Linje at that time. The ships on this important ferry connection on the Baltic Sea between Sweden and Denmark were traditionally named after princesses, which is why people quickly called the line Sessan, which is the colloquial abbreviation for princess in Swedish. "Sessan" was later adopted as the shipping company's official name.

Ulf Trapp himself was a shipowner and seaman in the third generation, the family originally came from Hanover in Germany. Trapp was an enthusiastic sailor and owned three Nordic folk boats one after the other, with which he also sailed regattas. The most successful was F-SWE-448 Atout ( Atout means asset or trump in French) built in 1957 by John Josefsson & Son Båtvarv, Kungsviken.

The Sessan Cup was initially sailed between cities on the Swedish west coast. The folk boat was very popular in Sweden in the 1950s, and over 400 folk boats were built there in the first ten years of the boat class. That's why all known Swedish sailors always sailed a folk boat. The Sessan Cup has been an international regatta at changing locations since 1976. a. also held in Helsinki, Stockholm and Kerteminde.

Today the Sessan Cup is administered and coordinated by the Nordic Folkboat International Association (NFIA). The umbrella organization is responsible for the statutes of the Sessan Cup and selects the organizing clubs and districts .

Initially only as an exception, the regatta was held for the first time in Germany on the Berlin Wannsee in 1989 by the Stößensee sailing club. SV Stößensee managed to open a new chapter. With the help of the Berlin folk boat fleet, 48 owners made their boats available. For the first time, seven different nations sailed the Sessan Cup. The guests came from the USA, Poland, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, the USSR and Germany. SV Stößensee organized the Sessan Cup in Berlin four times: 1989, 1993, 1997 and 2008.

In 2014 the Sessan Cup took place for the fifth time on the Wannsee in Berlin and was first organized by the Seglervereinigung 1903 Berlin eV The cup was won after 4 races by the defending team from Kolding with Per Jörgensen and Christian Thomsen. The Berlin team around helmsmen Stefan Klabunde and Udo Pflüger came in second. A total of 26 teams from 7 countries took part in 52 folk boats of the Berlin folk boat fleet.
