history

North American pond rush species Schoenoplectus acutus

Tularosa owes its name to Spanish settlers who wandered through barren desert areas looking for drinking water. When they found the pond rush species Schoenoplectus acutus , which is known in Spanish as Tule and has reddish-brown to pink (Spanish also pink ) flowers, they settled there and named the place Tularosa . Since pink also means "rose" in Spanish, the place, which actually likes to adorn itself with blooming roses, is now sometimes called the City of Roses and hosts a rose festival every year in May ( Rose Festival ). The official establishment as the Village of Tularosa took place in 1863. In the following period the community grew and architecturally valuable houses were built. In 1979 the Tularosa Original Townsite District with the Saint Francis de Paula Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places .

Today, following an old tradition, Tularosa is still known for the production of adobe and is also an active tourist base for tours to the nearby White Sands National Monument .
