The field handball cup round in 1972 was a substitute season for the field handball league officially suspended by the DHB that year . The cup round took place between April 8 and August 20, 1972, the cup final was played on August 20, 1972 in Rüsselsheim .

The first and only German cup winner in field handball was TS Steinheim 1874 , which won the final against TV Hochdorf with 17:15.

For the first time since 1934, no title " German Master " in field handball was awarded - apart from the war-related interruption in 1945 and 1946. The reason for this measure was that the field handball season was viewed as unfavorable in the preparation of the national handball team for the Summer Olympics 1972 in Munich; because only indoor handball was part of the Olympic program, the DHB had banned national players from participating in the field handball season. At the same time, the era of field handball as a sport came to an end in Germany, indoor handball, which was more attractive for athletes and the public, had prevailed: In the same year, on November 18, 1972, the DHB board decided to start the field handball Bundesliga after the season To be completed in 1973 and to have future championships played again via the regional leagues as they did before 1967.

mode

Like the Bundesliga, the cup round was held in two seasons with eight teams each, corresponding to the North and South Bundesliga, which determined the season winners in home and away matches. The first and second of the two seasons qualified for the semi-finals, which were also played in the home and return legs; the two semi-final winners contested the final of the cup championship.

Just as there was no German champion this season, no promoted or relegated teams were planned. Since last year's champion TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen withdrew his team from play in connection with the end of the Bundesliga announced by the DHB, a place in the Bundesliga North was still free for the following season, which the SG Bremen-Ost took as a climber from the regional league .

Summary of the season

In view of the fact that the field handball teams that had been successful up to then lacked their outstanding players due to the national players being banned, clubs that had previously finished in the middle or lower third of the table were able to come to the fore this season.

In the northern season, even a newcomer dominated the action: Eintracht Hagen only lost the away game against GW Dankersen and the home game against TV Oppum and won the northern group, albeit narrowly; the first four clubs in the final table were only one or two points apart. In the south, however, the TV Hochdorf won the season with a four point lead over the second from Steinheim. The gymnastics club Steinheim was only able to displace TV Großwallstadt from second place on the last match day; she benefited from her own success against TSV Birkenau from the fact that SG Leutershausen could just win their home game against Großwallstadt.

In the semi-finals, the southern German teams prevailed, so that Hochdorf and Steinheim met again in the final; Steinheim kept the happier end to himself in extra time.
