Field handball Bundesliga 1970

The field handball Bundesliga 1971 was the fifth Bundesliga season in German field handball . The games for the 22nd field handball championship of the DHB were played in a north and a south relay between April and August 1971; the final took place on August 8, 1971 in front of 18,000 spectators in the Dortmund "Kampfbahn" Rote Erde .

As in the previous year, the German champion was TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen , who defeated TuS 05 Wellinghofen in the final with 17:13.

Grün-Weiß Dankersen concluded the most successful year in the club's history with this third field championship - after it had looked at the beginning of this handball season as if the team would fall apart: The most important player of the past years, Herbert Lübking , had to end the season 1970 changed the club for professional reasons, and Dankersen was v. a. in the indoor handball Bundesliga acted as a relegation candidate. Contrary to what had been feared, the club was able to hold the team together, which responded to Lübking's departure with a defiant reaction: the most consistent field handball team in years had also become German indoor handball champions in the 1970/71 season .

Since field handball had rapidly lost its importance in West Germany, the Bundesliga experiment was discontinued after 1973. Green-White Dankersen remained the fourth and last club after RSV Mülheim (1949) of the SV Police Hamburg (1951-1953) and Frisch Auf Göppingen (1954), who managed the double championship .

TuS Ferndorf and SG Dietzenbach were relegated this season .

The league was played in two seasons with eight teams each, the national leagues north and south. In the first and second legs, the respective season winners and relegated teams were determined.

The two table first and second in each season qualified for the semi-finals, in the event of a tie, a play-off was held. The pairings of the semi-finals were decided in the first and second legs, the winners of the semi-finals played the final of the German championship.

The last team of each season had to relegate to the regional league.

Climbers

Because only indoor handball was part of the program for the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, the DHB had banned national players from participating in the following field handball season in 1972 ; the Bundesliga was officially suspended for 1972 and should only be played as a "cup round".

For the qualification of two teams for promotion to the Bundesliga and for participation in the cup round in 1972, qualifying games of the regional league champions of this 1971 summer season were scheduled.

The promoted to the Bundesliga North was determined between the champions of the regional associations West ( VfL Eintracht Hagen ) and North ( Hohner SV Eintracht ) in the first and second leg:

VfL Eintracht Hagen - Hohner SV Eintracht: 17:10 / 16:13

Hagen was promoted.

The champions of the South German ( TSV Allach 09 ) and the Southwest German Regional Association ( SV 1946 Crumstadt ) played the promoted to the Bundesliga South in a round trip:

SV 1946 Crumstadt - TSV Allach 09 : 12:16 / 15:16

Allach rose.

Summary of the season

As in the previous year, TuS Wellinghofen from Dortmund was the superior champion of the northern relay; the German champions from 1964 only lost the away game in Dankersen, the Wellinghofer provided the best attack and the best defense of all 16 Bundesliga clubs. At the end of the Bundesliga North season, Wellinghofen was five points ahead of second place Dankersen and 17 points ahead of the relegated from Ferndorf. On the other hand, things got closer in the Bundesliga South: At the end of the season, the season winner TV Hochdorf had two points ahead of the pursuers.

In the final round, the clubs of the northern season prevailed, so Dankersen and Wellinghofen met again in the final. And although this was a home game for Wellinghofen, nerves failed in the most important game of the season, Grün-Weiß Dankersen didn't give Dortmund a chance.
