The German field handball championship in 1964 was played in a final tournament between September 12th and October 25th, 1964. The tournament was the 15th championship round in men's field handball organized by the DHB . The final took place on October 25, 1964 in front of 25,000 spectators in Herford's Ludwig-Jahn Stadium .
The new German champion was TuS 05 Wellinghofen , which celebrated the first title win in the club's history. Wellinghofen defeated TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen 13: 9 in the final .
mode
16 teams competed against each other in an elimination tournament ( knockout system ), the mode was slightly changed compared to the previous year: For the first time, the preliminary round pairings (round of 16) were decided in home and away games, as had been the pairings of the intermediate round (quarter-finals since the 1962 finals) ) and the semi-finals. The winners of the semi-finals contested the final, no further placement games were held.
The following 15 teams had qualified directly for the preliminary round of the tournament via the respective regional championships:
North German Championship:
- VfL Wolfsburg (defending champion)
- Eintracht Braunschweig
- Hamburger SV
West German Championship:
Southwest German Championship:
South German Championship:
Berlin state / regional championship:
In addition, the fourth team of the South German Championship, TSV 1860 Ansbach , came as the 16th team after a qualifying game on September 6th . Ansbach prevailed 12: 8 against Berliner SV 1892 , the Berlin runner-up and German indoor champion in 1964 .
The playing time was 2 × 30 minutes, in the event of a tie after regular playing time, an extension of 2 × 10 minutes was provided in the final. In the round games, the better goal quotient of the home games decided with an even goal difference after the return leg : Fewer goals in the home game meant the better quotient for the corresponding home team. This corresponds de facto to the away goal rule applied later in handball as in other ball sports .
Tournament course
TuS Wellinghofen had already caused a sensation last year and had advanced to the semi-finals of the final round as a qualifier, this year the Dortmund suburbs made their masterpiece: In the preliminary round they prevailed against TuS Neunkirchen, in the second round against the Odenwälder Dorfverein TSV Birkenau, in the semifinals against the defending champions VfL Wolfsburg, and finally in the final against TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen. Its best player, national player Herbert Lübking , who had already shown himself to be able to decide games on his own, was successfully neutralized by the Wellinghofen defense and only threw one goal; Even in the second attempt after taking part in the finals in 1962 , Dankersen only achieved the thankless second place.
