German field handball championship 1947 - Open championship of the British zone of occupation

The German field handball championship in 1948 was played in an interzonal final tournament of the strongest clubs in the American-British bizone and West Berlin , the participating clubs had been determined via regional qualifying games.

The tournament was held between May 30 and June 20, 1948. The organizer was the "German Working Committee for Handball" (DAH), the predecessor organization of the German Handball Federation (DHB) and successor to the "German Working Committee for Handball in the British Zone", which had hosted the German championship a year earlier. The final took place on June 20 in front of 18,000 spectators in Oberhausen's Niederrhein stadium.

The new German champion was THW Kiel (then still known as TV Hassee-Winterbek), who won the final against SV Waldhof Mannheim 10: 8.

mode

The teams played the championship in a simple knockout round . The winning teams of the preliminary round determined the two finalists via a semi-final; no further placement games were carried out.

The following eight clubs had qualified for participation in the final tournament via the regional qualifying rounds; the SG Dietzenbach moved to after the SG Hassloch , winner of the qualification in the French zone had received no entry permit:

THW Kiel ( British zone of occupation )
Hamburger TB 1862 (British Zone of Occupation)
Fortuna 95 Düsseldorf (British zone of occupation)
RSV Mülheim (British zone of occupation, defending champion)
SV Waldhof Mannheim ( American zone of occupation )
TC Frisch Auf Göppingen (American zone of occupation)
SG Dietzenbach (American zone of occupation)
SG Wilmersdorf (corresponds to Berliner SV 1892 ; Berlin master, unofficial German master (Halle) 1948 )

In the event of a tie after regular playing time, an extension was planned to bring about the decision.

Tournament course

The SG Dietzenbach, which had only moved into the field because SG Haßloch was prevented, was able to prevail in the first game against the defending champion RSV Mülheim, but then failed in the semifinals at THW Kiel. The Kiel team around Hein Dahlinger showed itself to be consistently superior to their opponents in the course of the tournament, finally prevailing in the final - after problems in the first half (2: 3) - against last year's finalist and winner of the 1946 zone championship, SV Waldhof Mannheim (Final score 10: 8) and became superior German champion.

French Zone Championship

A championship round had also previously taken place in the French occupation zone . In the northern part of the zone (Palatinate and southern Rhineland) the Palatinate champions SG Haßloch had qualified for the final, in the southern part of the zone (Württemberg-Hohenzollern and southern Baden) the TSV Rot-Weiß Lörrach had been successful. In the final comparison of the two winning teams, Haßloch was able to prevail, after a success in the home game in the second leg in front of 7,800 spectators in Loerrach an 11:11 draw for the zone championship was enough . Haßloch would have been qualified to participate in the final round of the German championship. In contrast to the (unofficial) indoor championship in Bremen in February 1948 , when Haßloch was allowed to travel, the teams in the French zone did not receive permission from the occupation authorities to participate in the field handball championship.
