The German field handball championship in 1951 was played in an elimination tournament with a group phase between May 19 and July 1, 1951; the tournament was the second championship round in men's field handball organized by the DHB .

The final took place on July 1, 1951 in front of 18,000 spectators on Hamburg's Rothenbaumplatz . The new German champion was the SV Police Hamburg , which had already won the indoor championship this season. The sports association of the Hamburg police successfully took revenge for the narrow final defeat last year against the same opponent in the 12: 4 against the THW Kiel , then still under the name TV Hassee-Winterbek.

After the championships in 1941 and 1943, this was the third title win for Hamburg on the large field.

mode

Compared to the first DHB championship final round of the previous year, the DHB doubled the field of participants: The following 16 clubs had qualified for participation in the final round via the regional championships in 1951:

North German Championship:
  1. SV Police Hamburg ( German Champion (Halle) 1951 )
  2. THW Kiel (TV Hassee-Winterbek; defending champion)
  3. Police SV Kiel
  4. SV Rot-Weiß Braunschweig
West German Championship:
  1. RSV Mülheim
VfL Gummersbach
SV Bayer 04 Leverkusen
TuS 04 Rheinhausen
Southwest German Championship:
  1. TSG Haßloch
SV Green-White Obermendig
South German Championship:
  1. TC Frisch Auf Göppingen
TSV Red 05
SV Harleshausen
ESV Freilassing
Berlin Championship:
  1. Berliner SV 1892
  2. SC Rehberge

These teams first determined the participants in the group stage in a simple elimination round. The eight victorious teams then played in two groups to qualify for the group winners for the final. Placement games were not held.

The playing time was 2 × 30 minutes; in the event of a tie after regular playing time, the games were decided in extra time (2 × 10 minutes).

Tournament course

The favored teams consistently won their games in the elimination round, only the THW Kiel had to fight hard at SC Rehberge in Berlin and could only just win the game in extra time.

In the group phase, the superiority of the North German teams became very clear; THW Kiel won its games confidently, but the police game association from Hamburg turned out to be even more convincing and outclassed its opponents. And the Hamburg "police" were able to preserve their superiority until the final; Also the THW Kiel - unlike in the previous season - had nothing to counteract the storm pressure of the Hamburgers; at 6-0 after 18 minutes, the game was already decided.
