The German field handball championship in 1957 was played in a final tournament between June 2 and June 30, 1957. The tournament was the eighth championship round in men's field handball organized by the DHB . The final took place on June 30, 1957 in front of 12,000 spectators in the Karlsruhe Wildpark Stadium.

The new German champion was TC Frisch Auf Göppingen , the final opponent SG Leutershausen only finished second against SV Bayer 04 Leverkusen as last year . Frisch Auf won the final 11: 9 and won the second field handball championship title in the club's history, the Göppingen also succeeded in taking revenge for the defeat against the same opponent in the final of the South German Championship a month earlier.

mode

16 teams occurred in an eliminator in tournament Ko system with preliminary round (second round), intermediate round (quarter-finals) and final against each other, the winner of the semi-final denied the final; Placement games were not held.

The following 15 teams had qualified directly for the preliminary round of the tournament via the respective regional championships:

North German Championship:

  1. THW Kiel ( German Champion (Halle) 1957 )
  2. SV Hamburg Police
Police SV Kiel
VfL Wolfsburg

West German Championship:

  1. SV Bayer 04 Leverkusen (defending champion)
  2. VfL Gummersbach
  3. RSV Mülheim
  4. TuS Lintfort

Southwest German Championship:

  1. SG Dietzenbach
  2. Kickers Offenbach

South German Championship:

  1. SG Leutershausen
  2. TC Frisch Auf Göppingen
TSV Zuffenhausen 1899
TSV 1860 Ansbach

Berlin state / regional championship:

  1. Police SV Berlin

Then came the 16th team of the Berliner SV 1892 , runner-up of the Berlin handball association, who had beaten the third of the Southwest German Championship, the SV Harleshausen , in a qualifying game in May 1957 with 11:10.

The playing time was 2 × 30 minutes, in the event of a tie after regular playing time, an extension of 2 × 10 minutes was carried out; In the preliminary round of the two old masters, SV Police Hamburg and RSV Mülheim, only a second extension of another 2 × 10 minutes led to a decision after a total of 100 minutes of playing time.

Tournament course

In the preliminary round, the favored teams prevailed, but half of the matches were only decided in extra time. The top teams from North Germany from Kiel (TV Hassee-Winterbek) and Hamburg (SV Polizei), who together won five of the previous seven championships of the DHB and had reached the final three times, only reached the next round with difficulty. The reporter for the Hamburger Abendblatt noted for the Hamburg game against Mülheim that the police club no longer had the ease it used to play, and he criticized the inflexible tactical focus of the Hamburg game on Maychrzak's throwing force .

While a renaissance of the success story of North German handball seemed conceivable after the intermediate round, the semifinals clearly showed the new realities. The second of the South German championship, Frisch Auf Göppingen, ultimately won confidently in Hamburg, even if after a quick 3: 6 lead by Göppingen and a Hamburg sprint at halftime it suddenly meant 9: 6 for the police club. In the second half, too, Hamburg was able to withstand the "storm vortex" of the Kempa boys for a while - until 12:11. From then on only Göppingen played, superbly directed by Bernhard Kempa in the role of player-coach - final score 12:17. The Wolfsburg, who appeared impressively up to this point in time, a. defeated the defending champions from Leverkusen, lost in the other semifinals to the South German champions from Leutershausen.

This was the first time that the final had become a purely southern German affair. And it was the new edition of the final of the South German Championship that Leutershausen won in extra time on May 26, 1957 (14:11, 8: 8) after Göppingen had already led 8: 4 at halftime. This time Göppingen also had the better end in extra time because Bernhard Kempa reactivated himself again for the championship finals, as in the semi-finals, after he actually retired as an active player after the runner-up in Göppingen in the spring of 57 Handball player had announced. In the “heat battle” in the Karlsruhe stadium, the better condition of the Göppingeners, but also the routine, the wit and the game overview of the world class handball player made the difference.
