For the first time after the end of the field handball league in the preseason, a final round of the regional associations was held as between 1947 and 1966. The champions of the five regional associations (Berlin: Landesverband) played the German championship among themselves in a simple knockout round . First, the number of participants was reduced to four through a qualification game, the winning teams of the two subsequent semi-finals played the final; no further placement games were carried out.
The following five regional association champions were qualified to participate:
- TuS Schaar Wilhelmshaven (North German Master)
- TuS Ferndorf (West German Master)
- SV 1946 Crumstadt (Southwest German Champion)
- TSV Birkenau (South German Champion)
- Reinickendorfer Füchse (Berlin Masters)
In the event of a tie after regular playing time, the decision should be extended by an extension.
Tournament course
With the withdrawal of the top clubs from field handball, teams from the second row came into play in these last two championship rounds in 1974 and 1975. Of the clubs that qualified for the 1974 finals, only the later champions TSV Birkenau was already established as a Bundesliga representative in the top division, Birkenau first appeared in the 1961 finals , then qualified regularly and played all seasons of the field handball Bundesliga .
The Reinickendorfer Füchse from Berlin could also look back on a long tradition of taking part in handball finals, but were not represented in the field handball Bundesliga - all other clubs had qualified for the finals for the first time.
