The OSC 04 Rheinhausen e. V. (full name: Olympischer Sport Club 04 Rheinhausen e.V. ) is a sports club in Duisburg-Rheinhausen , which was created in 1971 from the merger of TuS Rheinhausen and ESV Jahn Rheinhausen . With around 2800 members, OSC 04 Rheinhausen is one of the larger sports clubs in North Rhine-Westphalia .

On December 6, 2018, the association filed for bankruptcy with the local court. The club ran into financial difficulties due to the Sportwelt Rheinhausen health center, which opened in December 2016, and incorrectly calculated the payment of sales tax . A merger with the Turnerbund Rheinhausen is also planned to save it.

Development and successes

In addition to sports such as handball, football, gymnastics, athletics and martial arts, there are and are also rarer types of sports in the OSC 04 Rheinhausen department.

Earlier department offers at OSC 04 Rheinhausen:

The OSC 04 Rheinhausen produced various records and championships in national as well as international top-class sport in the course of its club existence. As early as 1922, the athlete Ludwig Hummerjohann achieved an unbelievable best for the time with 10.6 s over 100 meters and impressed with a long jump of 7.06 m. The handball player Günter Ortmann became Olympic champion in field handball in 1936 and set the first historical accent for the handball tradition at OSC 04 Rheinhausen, which is still great today. Gerd Nellen was appointed goalkeeper in the national handball team in 1951. The handball player Gerd Rosendahl won World Cup gold with the German national team in 1978. Also to be emphasized are the first Bundesliga years of OSC 04 Rheinhausen in men's handball, which made handball the club's “flagship” at OSC 04 Rheinhausen.

Youth work

As early as the early 1970s, OSC 04 Rheinhausen was increasingly involved in youth work and promotion. In 1982, the Lord Mayor of Duisburg awarded OSC 04 Rheinhausen the certificate of honor for outstanding services in the field of youth work. In 1990 the then 20-year-old youth handball department of the OSC 04 Rheinhausen received the "Green Ribbon for exemplary talent promotion in the club" of the Dresdner Bank.

Departments

badminton

The badminton department of OSC 04 Rheinhausen was founded in 1957. It emerged from the table tennis department of what was then TuS Rheinhausen. The OSC 04 Rheinhausen was one of the top teams in German badminton in the 1970s and 1980s. With the organization of the International Badminton Championship in Germany, the OSC and the Turnerbund Rheinhausen entered new territory in 1984. Two years later, the "German Open" became a major advertisement for badminton. Up to 6000 enthusiastic spectators were counted on the days of the event in the sports hall Krefelder Straße of the OSC 04 Rheinhausen. In 1991 the OSC again organized the German badminton championship in Rheinhausen.

The first successes were already recorded in the mid-1970s. In 1976 Rolf Heyer won the title of German Youth Champion in badminton. A year later, the 34-time national player Brigitte Steden won all three possible titles at the German badminton championships. 1979 Rolf Heyer and Bärbel Murrach become German badminton runners-up in mixed. Rolf Heyer won the German junior championship title in 1980 as well. While it should be Meyer’s last outing in the junior division, Kirsten Schmieder is another young OSC talent that is attracting attention. She became German badminton champion of the youth and the juniors and repeated this achievement in 1981 and 1982. With Matthias Heger (1982) and Michael Ferlings (1983) two other German champions of the juniors come from the club. Both Heyer and Schmieder continued their achievements in the senior sector. Together with Karin Schäfers , Rolf Heyer won third place at the German championships in 1981, while Kirsten Schmieder won three DM titles, in singles in 1985 as well as in doubles in 1983 and 1985. The density of performance in the Rheinhauser badminton team in the mid-1980s was shown by winning the German Team championship 1984. In addition to the "guarantors of success" Heyer and Schmieder, the players Petra Dieris-Wierichs , Udo Kamperdicks , Serian Wiyatno , Joachim Schulz , Matthias Heger and Michael Ferlings took part in the OSC . The championship team was looked after by coach Schäfers.

Handball

Handball has always played an important role in the history of OSC 04 Rheinhausen. The most famous club members and players of the OSC Rheinhausen were u. a. Achim Schürmann (2007-2011 coach of the first men's team of the OSC) and world handball player Daniel Stephan , Günter Ortmann (in the German national team at the 1936 Olympic Games), Gerd Nellen (participation in numerous international field handball games) from their own youth ) and Gerd Biefang (national goalkeeper at the World Cup in field handball in 1966).

Handball men

Before the official founding of the club OSC 04 Rheinhausen, on 13 August 1971, the predecessor club ESV Jahn Rheinhausen in the summer seasons played in 1970 and 1971 in the field handball league .

With the promotion to the indoor handball Bundesliga in 1974, OSC 04 Rheinhausen was one of the founding members of the single-track handball Bundesliga until 1977 . The greatest success was reaching the semi-finals for the German championship in May 1977, where the OSC failed on TV Großwallstadt.

After relegation to the Bundesliga in 1979, a year-long interlude in the top division was achieved in the 1993/94 season , and in 1995 they were promoted again. After two and a half years, the OSC had to withdraw from the handball Bundesliga at the end of December 1997 in the middle of the season because of the bankruptcy of the main sponsor, the Götzen company. After a fresh start in the regional league (6th division) in 1998, the OSC played from 2004/05 to 2009/10 in the Regionalliga West (3rd division).

On May 8, 2010, the team was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga. After only one year of play, the club started in the third division in 2011/12 . On May 11, 2013 the OSC 04 Rheinhausen completed its last home game in the 3rd division under the old club name. Against the Rhenish rival ART Düsseldorf, the OSC managed a 33:29 victory. In February 2013 the merger of the OSC Rheinhausen with the handball men from Hamborn 07 was decided.

Under the new name "SG OSC Löwen Duisburg", the syndicate took the Rheinhausen team's place in the 3rd division in the 2013/14 season.

After only two years the era of the SG OSC Löwen was over. After relegation to the league, the Hamborner got out of the syndicate in spring 2015.

The OSC was at the start in the 2015/16 season together with the Wölfen Nordrhein. In the Oberliga season, the new syndicate, which ran under the name "OSC Wölfe Rheinhausen", qualified for the new North Rhine Regional League with ninth place in the table.

After countless discussions between the two club boards, the preliminary decision has been reached that the OSC handball players will not participate in the SG for the time being. Thus the handball era under the well-known name OSC Rheinhausen is over for the time being. However, participation in a syndicate at a later date is not excluded.

From the 2016/17 season onwards, HC Wölfe Nordrhein competed alone. In September 2016 a new era began in the Rheinhausen handball history. After being promoted to the Regionalliga Nordrhein in the 2019/20 season, HC Wölfe Nordrhein broke up again to rejoin the traditional club OSC Rheinhausen.

Duisburg and their first team play their home games in the venerable sports hall on Krefelder Strasse. This offers the spectators 1500 seats.

The women's handball department was founded in the summer of 1963 and achieved its greatest sporting success in the 1977/78 season by winning the West German championship and thus advancing to the handball league. Unfortunately, after just one year, the team was relegated immediately. Mention should be made of Gisela Gerten , who was an outstanding player in the German national team in the 1960s.

athletics

The athletics department is one of the oldest and most successful departments of the OSC Rheinhausen . As a long-time member of the club, Willi Lamberti played a decisive role in the upswing and success of the athletics department of the OSC 04 Rheinhausen. Lamberti joined TUS 04 Rheinhausen in 1932 as a ten-year-old. After the chaos of the war, he took over the training of young women in athletics in 1948, under difficult conditions. His athletes were able to bring some German championships to Rheinhausen in the 1950s. Today, 80 senior citizens and 120 schoolchildren do sports in the athletics department. Since 1989 the OSC 04 Rheinhausen has been running the athletics department's student group more competitively and is thus in the tradition of sustainable youth promotion work. Numerous prominent placements in the best lists of the German Athletics Association (DLV) attest to the successful youth work. The OSC school sport festival, which in 2011 will be held for the 15th time with the OSC 04 Rheinhausen as the host, has a permanent place in the calendar of the North Rhine Athletics Association. The Volksparklauf has also established itself, in which almost 500 active endurance athletes of all ages took part in the 4th edition in 2011.

chess

With an average of up to 80 active members, the OSC 04 Rheinhausen chess department is the largest organized chess club group in the Duisburg area. (As of July 2011)

On June 14, 1924, the first chess club, the Rheinhausen Chess Society (SG Rheinhausen), was founded in Rheinhausen. In other parts of the city such as Friemersheim, Bergheim, Asterlagen and Hochemmerich, other associations were founded later. On March 27, 1949, the SG Rheinhausen merged with other chess clubs from the Rheinhausen city area (Schachklub Rheinhausen, Schachverein Bergheim & Schachgemeinschaft Asterlagen) to form a "Working Group of Rheinhausen Chess Clubs". This was followed in 1972 by the merger of the SG Rheinhausen with other Rheinhausen chess clubs to form the Rheinhausen 1924 chess club (SV Rheinhausen 1924). The clubs involved were the Bergheim chess club (founded in 1935), the Turm Rheinhausen chess club (founded in 1970) and, shortly after the merger, the Rheinhausen chess club (founded in 1935). In 1981 the SV Rheinhausen joined the OSC 04 Rheinhausen e. V. as an independent department.

The first Shaolin Kempo association was founded in Germany in 1965 by Hermann Scholz from Kleve . Shaolin Kempo coach Juan Marquez began his career in 1987 at AKS Rheinhausen. In 1988 he joined the OSC as a trainer for the newly established Shaolin Kempo department. Young people and adults trained simultaneously in the rooms of the old girls' grammar school and in the indoor swimming pool in Schwarzenberger Str. And Krupp grammar school. In November 1999, premises were rented from the Big-Frog fitness chain, which was used until February 2000. In February 2000 another restaurant was rented. Schelmenweg was used intensively for training Shaolin Kempo until February 2003. Then the venerable halls became too small and a former dining restaurant on Rheingoldstrasse was converted into the new Dōjō . The game was played until 1991. Two years later, a men's team was interested in regular play again, so in 1993 the OSC rejoined the WBV. There were even youth teams again, but in the long run the competition from VfL Rheinhausen, Homberger TV and Rumelner TV was too great. In 2009 he left again.
